We used data obtained from wedding announcements in the New York Times newspaper from 1971 through 2005 ( N = 2,400) to test 9 hypotheses related to brides' decisions to change or retain their maiden names upon marriage. As predicted, a trend was found in brides keeping their surname, and correlates included the bride's occupation, education, age, and the type of ceremony (religious versus nonsectarian). Toward a Psychology of Parimutuel Behavior
Two propositions based on the observations and deductions of Fred H. Gluckstein are tested, both relating to parimutuel behavior. Because they were originally pronounced with emphatic certitude, they were never seen as speculations or theories—they were Gluck's Laws. The first proposition, that weekday bettors bet better was supported: the within-race rank-order correlations between parimutuel odds and order of finish were .57 and .42 for weekday…
The Effect of Grouped versus Randomized Questionnaire Format on Scale Reliability and Validity
Three studies were conducted exploring the effects of two questionnaire formats (grouping versus randomized items) on internal consistency and test-retest reliability, convergent and discriminant validity, and accuracy in respondent-provided descriptions. The results of these studies (two correlational, one experimental) were reasonably consistent in showing that neither format is clearly superior to the other on any of the examined psychometric …

Many variables have been examined in connection with assortative mating; however, one factor that has been overlooked is alliteration, partners whose first names begin with the same letter. It was predicted that the incidence of alliterative matches among married couples would exceed that expected due to chance alone. It was posited that, when items comprising scales are grouped by content or grouped by content and labeled, scale reliabilities will be superior to those obtained when items are randomly distributed in a questionnaire. Fear of success was measured for 83 female high school seniors. It was hypothesized that daughters of working mothers would exhibit lower fear of success than daughters of non-working mothers, and such fear would be affected by three aspects of maternal employment, level, duration, and volitionality.
