The Construction and Usage of Kiowa Personal Names
This article provides the first detailed study of Kiowa personal names. It analyzes the grammar of Kiowa names built from words, phrases, and sentences, as well as how Kiowas abbreviated them. This paper also discusses the meaning behind personal names. Unlike many communities, Kiowa names tend to commemorate significant events, rather than just describing people. Mediating functions and the semantics of noun incorporation
Noun incorporation is commonly thought to avoid the weak compositionality of compounds because it involves conjunction of an argument noun with the incorporating verb. However, it is weakly compositional in two ways. First, the noun’s entity argument needs to be bound or saturated, but previous accounts fail to adequately ensure that it is. This paper introduces a new survey of switch-reference in the languages of North America. Slim Bodies, Eating Disorders and the Coach-Athlete Relationship
This study explores the experiences of a former elite swimmer, Anne (a pseudonym), whose career was interrupted and finally terminated by disordered eating. The work is grounded in the need to tell Anne's story in relation to compliance within a culture of slenderness and norms, and the role of the coach within that culture. Using interpretive biography, the data illustrate how the creation of strong athletic identity led to a vulnerable sense of…
A True Demon Bound by No Rules
The layering of the relationship between father and son, in Lone Wolf and Cub, an epic narrative set against the backdrop of feudal Japan during the Tokugawa era (1600-1867), brings fresh facets to the archetypal narrative crossing many boundaries. The narrative was adapted into the six films (1972-1974), which continues the development of the narrative rather than repeating a formula, as so often happens in film sequels.
