Contemporary scholarship has begun to focus more on understanding the myriad health disparities (e.g., sexual anxiety, depression) related to sexual identity and its correlates. Sexual satisfaction is linked to many of these disparities, thereby serving as a potentially impactful correlate to understand more deeply in ways that might suggest potential intervention sites to mitigate various disparities. Further, there have also been calls to consi…

  • Pathways to Successful Queer Stepfamily Formation

Carrie Bergeson, Autumn Bermea et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of GLBT Family Studies•2020

Queer stepfamilies occupy multiple marginalized statuses (e.g., queer, step). Accordingly, it is logical to expect these stepfamilies might be particularly vulnerable to adjustment difficulties, and scant literature demonstrates some of these. Other literature suggests some queer stepfamilies might be particularly flexible, adept, and less rooted in heteronormative ideals (e.g., expecting queer repartnerships to function like first partnerships) …

Focus groups were conducted, recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. Through thematic analysis, the authors identified two messaging sources identified by participants: (1) formal education sources (i.e., school and parents), and (2) informal educat…

  • Undoing Normativities and Creating Family

Autumn Bermea, Brad Van Eeden‐moorefield et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of GLBT Family Studies•2019

Although the stepfamily literature is well developed, most examines heterosexual stepfamilies and fails to note the presence of those headed by same-gender couples. This especially is true of male couples assumed unlikely to have children. Our case study uses a queer lens to examine a stepfamily headed by gay men. Family, couple, and focal child interviews were coded using thematic analysis. Findings indicate family members rejected normative fam…

  • A Content Analysis of the First Decade of the Journal of GLBT Family Studies

Jacqueline Bible, Autumn Bermea et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of GLBT Family Studies•2018

The emergence of several specialized journals that examine the experiences of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) individuals, families, and communities, particularly the Journal of GLBT Family Studies, has profoundly shaped GLBT research. Engaging in taking stock activities helps to identify trends on which future research should focus to further develop the field. For example, scholars suggest critical analysis of journal publication…
