  • Strengthening internal horizontal equity

    Open Access•Lina Maria Sanchez-Cespedes, Glenn Harry Amaya-Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2026

Cadastral systems are central to property taxation, urban planning, and territorial governance, yet in many cities—particularly in the Global South—they suffer from outdated information, poor data quality, and inconsistent valuation. These limitations undermine both horizontal and vertical equity, weakening fiscal capacity and public trust. This paper proposes an integrated framework that combines machine learning and bootstrap-based simulation t…

  • Measuring access to contraceptive methods by ethnic groups in Colombia using small areas estimation

    Open Access•Lina Maria Sanchez-Cespedes, Juan Sebastián Oviedo-Mozo et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2025•Referencias: 13

Afro-descendant and Indigenous women face limited access to contraceptives due to contextual barriers, partner disapproval, and educational gaps. One major challenge in designing policies to facilitate access to safe, effective, acceptable, and affordable contraceptive methods for these groups is the lack of data for informed decision-making by national and local governments. To address this information gap, we propose using small area estimation…

  • Modifying model life tables to derive mortality curves for countries with excess mortality

    Open Access•Lina Maria Sanchez-Cespedes•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2025•Referencias: 7

BACKGROUNDModel life tables are valuable tools for filling gaps in mortality data when estimates are only available for specific age groups, and have been used in many countries. However, their relevance has declined, as they fail to account for cause-specific mortality, leading to biased results in populations with significant differences from the reference data, such as countries with high levels of violence or road accidents. OBJECTIVEThis stud…

  • Social cartography and satellite-derived building coverage for post-census population estimates in difficult-to-access regions of Colombia

    Open Access•Lina Maria Sanchez-Cespedes, Douglas Ryan Leasure et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•2024•Referencias: 27

Effective government services rely on accurate population numbers to allocate resources. In Colombia and globally, census enumeration is challenging in remote regions and where armed conflict is occurring. During census preparations, the Colombian National Administrative Department of Statistics conducted social cartography workshops, where community representatives estimated numbers of dwellings and people throughout their regions. We repurposed…

  • Gender differences in the use of coping strategies to reduce food insecurity in Colombia

    Open Access•Lina Maria Sanchez-Cespedes, Eliana Lorena Suárez-Higuera et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

This study explores the gender differences in the use of coping strategies to reduce food insecurity in Colombian urban and rural households. Data was collected from the Colombian National Survey of Nutritional Status (ENSIN 2015), and analyzed using ordinal logistic regression models, logistic models, and simultaneous equation models. Results show that rural households have a higher prevalence of food insecurity than their urban counterparts. Af…

  • Armed Conflict and Adolescents’ Early Transition to Childbearing

Open Access•Lina Maria Sanchez-Cespedes•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2018

We estimate the effect of armed conflict on adolescents’ childbearing transition. Three types of models are estimated: models in origin, which determine the current effect of violence; context change models, which estimate the effect of decreased violence levels; and violence aftermath models, which indicate the groups that do not completely adapt to a peaceful context. Through multilevel logistic models, we find that the coefficient of violence …
