Does More Egalitarian Ideology Foster More Egalitarian Household Work Division? Marriage, Work, and Family Life in Japan
Recent research shows that gender ideology may not be stable among individuals over time. However, there is little evidence on the changes in gender and family attitudes in non-Western contexts. Using data from 11 waves (2011–2021) of the Japanese Panel Survey of Consumers (JPSC), we construct fixed-effects models that reveal how women’s gender attitudes, together with life events such as parenthood and women’s employment, shape unpaid work distr…
Changing regional university availability and inequality of educational opportunity in Japan
The uneven distribution of universities across regions has been argued to create educational inequalities based on place of residence. While studies have shown positive associations between college proximity, measured by distance to nearest college or its presence, and enrolment among local residents, regional availability has often been measured insufficiently, and longitudinal evidence on the relationship is limited. Using multiple social surve…
Revisiting the Relationship between Marriage and Childbearing in East Asia
In this study, we propose and evaluate a new framework for understanding “lowest‐low” fertility in East Asia, emphasizing the link between the desire for children and marriage. Recognizing that delayed and declining marriage is the primary reason for low fertility in the region, we posit that marriage decisions are shaped by intentions or incentives (not) to have children. We evaluate this hypothesis using Japan as a case, a society where parenth…
More than usage
Since the COVID-19 outbreak, there has been renewed interest in remote work. While socioeconomic gap in remote work usage is well-studied, little is known about a key underlying aspect of inequality: access to remote work. Using Japanese panel data from January 2020 to 2024, this study examines the evolution of class and education gaps in access, distinguishing between active use (“access and use”) and potential use (“access but non-use”) among a…
Decomposing delayed first marriage and birth across cohorts
BACKGROUNDIncreased employment instability over recent decades has been argued to contribute to delayed family formation.Although previous research has shown negative associations between employment instabilitysuch as unemployment, nonstandard employment, or unstable employment trajectoriesand entry into marriage and childbirth, direct evidence on how increased employment instability to delayed marriage and childbirth across cohorts remains limit…
Cohort change in the educational gradient in women’s employment around childbirth in Japan
Disaggregating the relationship between precarious employment and delayed marriage in Japan
Whose tastes matter? Discrimination against immigrants in the Japanese labour market
The existence and mechanisms of ethnic discrimination in hiring decisions have been extensively studied, but the following two gaps remain: non-Western societies and taste-based discrimination. In this contribution, we investigate whether ethnic discrimination and its mechanisms are similarly observable in the Japanese labour market. Additionally, to reflect Becker’s initial idea, we decompose the sources of taste-based discrimination into employ…
Long-term Trends in Women’s Employment and its Educational Differentials in Childbearing and Childrearing
Role of Cohort Size in Trends in Class and Occupational Returns to Education at First Job
Downward trends in class and occupational returns to education have mainly been attributed to educational expansion via credential inflation. However, despite this rapid educational expansion, trends in returns to education vary across societies. This study proposes that changes in population size can contribute to offsetting the impact of educational expansion, controlling for demand-side factors. Using nationally representative survey data from…
