Educational stratification and political interest
This study examines whether changing educational tracks at the transition to upper secondary school affects the development of political interest among German adolescents. Using 5 years of panel data from the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS; N = 1578), we distinguish between academic tracks leading to higher education entrance qualifications and non-academic tracks leading to vocational qualifications. Linear panel models show that student…
Teacher practice under the structural challenges of academic second chance education
Academic second-chance education (SCE) provides young adults with the opportunity for upward mobility. However, many young people in academic SCE have unfavourable prerequisites, which make it difficult for them to meet academic requirements. In this article, we explore how teachers respond to this challenge in their practice and the extent to which teacher practice matches learner expectations. We look at formal academic SCE and the following as…
International Perspectives on Vocational Schools as Pathways to Higher Education
This thematic issue investigates vocational schools as pathways to higher education (HE) across several countries, analyzing their potential to enhance educational and social mobility. With rising global demand for HE, vocational education and training (VET) systems offer alternative routes to HE, with vocational schools playing a crucial role, providing opportunities for students from less privileged backgrounds. The issue examines how vocationa…
Vocational Pathways to Higher Education
In this study, we examine whether vocational pathways to a higher education entrance certificate (HEEC) via upper secondary vocational schools lead to wages in the first five years of the occupational career that are comparable to the wages achieved after following the “royal roads” in general education, which lead directly to HEEC. We derive hypotheses on wage differences and the reasons for these differences from classical labour market theorie…
Pupils' knowledge of rules and its influence on rule-breaking behaviour in the classroom – A mixed methods study
This study explores pupils’ knowledge of rules and its connection with their behaviour during lessons. A mixed methods approach that includes standardised classroom observations conducted on 63 days in 22 first-year classes and qualitative interviews with 107 individual children is used. Qualitative analyses suggest that the majority of children know the rules specific to the classroom they are in and demonstrate how differentiated their knowledg…
Being Nice' as Modus Vivendi in Classrooms
This study of first-year primary school draws on Goffman's concept of 'collective behavior' to examine how order is established and disrupted through the mutual adjustment of all participants' actions. We employed a multi-method longitudinal design, using semi-standardized observations and qualitative interviews with teachers and children at three points during the year. We found that children contribute to the social order of the classroom by 'b…
Counselling of immigrant students in schools – the development of shared understanding between advisers and students
Careers advisers in schools are of great importance. In order for the counselling to be effective, a social capital-intensive relationship must be built up between adviser and student, characterised by trust and shared understanding of roles and expectations. The aim of this quantitative study is to investigate the influence of a student’s immigration status on the judgement of counselling by both adviser and student as well as its influence on t…
Doing Adulthood While Returning to School
This article focuses on young people between 18 and around 30 in Germany returning to school after dropping out or finishing their education at a lower level than they are now striving for. The facilities they attend provide what is called a “second-chance education”; the possibility of upgrading their school-leaving certificate at a later stage. However, the curricula and school regulations of the secondary schools apply in these institutions. T…
The development of the intention to study of pupils from different social backgrounds in non-traditional pathways to higher education
In this paper we investigate whether and if so why different pathways to higher education (HE) have an effect on the development of the intention to study and its motivational factors of pupils from different social backgrounds. In Germany as well as in many other countries, non-traditional pathways—mostly vocational oriented schools, but also comprehensive schools—lead to eligibility for HE. Drawing on the theory of planned behaviour (Ajzen in O…
Stereotypes about overweight students and their impact on grading among physical education teachers
A student’s weight is a particularly important characteristic in physical education. Research has shown that physical education teachers and people working in this area are particularly likely to hold strong negative implicit biases toward overweight students and that these students tend to earn lower grades in physical education. Stereotypes of overweight people might color teachers’ judgments of these students. In this study, we experimentally …
The influence of in-group and out-group favouritism on the disciplinary practice of ethnic majority and minority preservice teachers
Teacher judgments and the disciplinary sanctioning of pupils can be understood as a function of the ethnic match, which means whether or not teachers and pupils have the same ethnic background. According to social identity theory, teachers should be motivated to protect positive self-esteem and therefore favour pupils of their ethnic in-group over pupils of their ethnic out-group. Following system justification theory however, it must be assumed …
The gap between learners’ personal needs and institutional demands in second chance education in Germany
In Germany about half of the adult learners who start second chance education drop out before graduation. In this paper we aim to contribute to an explanation for this low success rate. We focus on the normative expectations of learners: What are their expectations concerning teachers’ attention to their personal abilities, teacher support and the recognition of their needs, and to what extent are these expectations met by teachers? Our main assu…
