The Social Structure of Accumulation (SSA) approach owes its existence to two interrelated developments that date back to the mid-1970s. Stages of Capitalism and Social Structures of Accumulation
The Marxian theory of stages of capitalism emerged in two waves. The first wave, at the turn of the twentieth century, was rooted in the Marxist response to the recovery of capitalism from its late nineteenth-century crisis. Conversely, the second wave in the 1970s grew out of the faltering of the relatively unproblematic accumulation associated with the post–World War II capitalist order. This article conducts groundwork for a discussion of Marx’s influence through examining the boundaries of the specifically Marxian school of economics. This Marxian school extends well beyond the bounds of the self-identified Marxian school. An emerging consensus rates Ireland’s austerity strategy a success. Any consideration of the state of Ireland today must begin by calling this narrative into question. Many severe weaknesses remain. Critical Realism and the Althusserian Legacy
This paper undertakes an historical re‐evaluation of Louis Althusser's philosophical legacy for modern Marxism. While Althusser self‐consciously sought to defend the scientific character of Marxism, many of his closest followers eventually exited the Marxian paradigm for a post‐structural post‐Marxism. We argue that this development was predominately rooted in a series of philosophical errors that proved fatal in a period of retreat for European …

Spatial restructuring of work across borders is an ongoing process that relies on heterogeneity of place. This paper argues that while critical realist insights are important for heterodoxy, any engagement with the economic mainstream must remain faithful to Bhaskar's original formulation with its explicit focus on 'ideology critique'.
