Do internships in master’s programmes help graduates to get a well-matched job
This paper illustrates how and when master’s-level internships and work placements contribute to finding a well-matched post-graduation job in Spain. Their duration and curricular or extracurricular nature are found to be irrelevant unless students remain with their placement employers for their first post-graduation job (i.e. internships function as door openers). It is only then that extracurricular and longer internships are associated with lo…

Gender differences in the gap between desired and observed fertility in Spain
The aim of this paper is to analyze gender differences in the determinants of the gap between actual and desired fertility in Spain. To this aim, we exploit the 2018 Fertility Survey (EF2018) from the Spanish Statistical Institute (INE). A binary probit model shows that gender differences in the risk (and its pattern) of not reaching the desired family size are generally more pronounced amongst parents than amongst childless adults. For women, a …
Geographical Mobility and Educational Mismatch in University Graduates
This paper explores the role of geographical mobility in reducing overeducation risks in recent university graduates in Spain based on a sample from the Survey of Labour Insertion of University Graduates 2019 (EILU‐2019). We distinguish between different moments for mobility and whether it took place across regions within Spain or overseas. We also consider graduates' family background (parents with tertiary education versus the rest) and disting…
Language proficiency and immigrants’ employment outcomes in Spain
This paper analyses the impact of Spanish proficiency on first generation immigrants’ employment outcomes, based on the Spanish Labour Force Survey 2014 ad hoc module on “labour market situation of migrants and their immediate descendants”. Proficiency in Spanish enhances immigrants’ employability, particularly for immigrants from non-Spanish-speaking countries, as well as on occupation prestige, measured via ISEI (International Socio-Economic In…
Educational mismatch in recent university graduates. The role of labour mobility
This article analyses patterns of persistence in both vertical and horizontal educational mismatch in the early career of university graduates in Spain, with particular emphasis on the mediating role of job mobility. We explore whether educational mismatch is a stepping stone towards better-matched positions or whether graduates get trapped in mismatched jobs. Our results show that job mobility partially corrects educational mismatch (supporting …
Women’s Employment and Childcare Choices in Spain Through The Great Recession
The Great Recession (2008–13) changed patterns in women’s employment and the use of formal and informal external childcare among mothers of young children in Spain. This paper analyzes these changes using an analytical strategy that takes into account interdependencies across the outcomes under study. The results show that the economic crisis has resulted in interesting changes in the use of external childcare across mothers’ and fathers’ employm…

Female employment and fertility trajectories in Spain
This article describes the evolution of labour market participation and fertility patterns in Spain among women born between 1956 and 1970. Trajectories are captured by combining partnership, employment and motherhood over a 20-year span (from the age of 16 to the age of 35). Using Optimal Matching Analysis, four different patterns in female trajectories are identified: (1) early marriage/non-working mother/high fertility; (2) late marriage/worki…
The Role of Education in Fertility and Female Employment in Spain
Over the past five decades, female education attainment has significantly increased in Spain. At the same time, preferences have changed considerably with regard to the role of women in the labor market and in the family. This fact has had a major impact on young women's decisions: A delay in their entry in the labor market, union formation, and fertility decisions, together with a higher level of persistence in participation once in the labor ma…

Education is a key determinant of health in Europe
This paper has contributed to confirming the link between education and health in developed countries. The analysis is based on 11 European Union countries. We estimate country-specific health functions, where the dependent variable is self-reported health status and the education attainment is one of the main inputs. All eight waves (1994-2001) of the European Community Household Panel are deployed. A random effects ordered probit is estimated i…
