  • Reconceptualising activism space in the contemporary Global South

    Hosna J Shewly, E Gerharz•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2025•Referencias: 29

This edited volume reconceptualises ‘activism space’ in the contemporary Global South as a dynamic, adaptive and multi-sited formation shaped by colonial legacies, authoritarian repression and epistemic inequality. It critiques Eurocentric frameworks that overlook the situated logics and spatial innovations of resistance emerging under volatile political conditions. Highlighting movements across seven countries (India, South Africa, Palestine, Ir…

  • Claiming space in civil society. Young Muslim moral personhoods in Bangladesh and Italy

    Open Access•Andrea Priori, E Gerharz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Civil Society•2024•Referencias: 13

In this article we analyze the multi-layered engagements of young Muslim activists in Dhaka (Bangladesh) and in the 'Bangladeshi community' in Rome (Italy), illustrating how, despite the local factors shaping a problematic relationship between Islamic activism and civil society in the two contexts, the young people share an attitude that points to the manifestations of a public Islam on a global level. This attitude aims at transcending the secta…

  • Introduction to the Special Issue

    Open Access•Lyn Yates, A Daniel et al.•ARTICLE•Social movement studies•2024•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 61

The future -as a theme, research orientation, and mode of framing societal challenges -is becoming important in the social sciences.Yet the absence of collective action in many such accounts makes clear the potential contribution of social movement studies. In social movement studies, meanwhile, the future has been discussed directly and indirectly.Assumptions about timing, activist orientations towards the future, and causation are embedded in un…

  • Renegotiating being Tamil post-'Tigers

    Open Access•Thivitha Himmen, E Gerharz•ARTICLE•South Asian Diaspora•2024•Referencias: 23

This article explores identity construction among second-generation Tamils in Germany, focusing on young adults. Rogers Brubaker's groupism framework helps us to understand how the process of Tamil identity formation in diasporic contexts has been shaped by the Tamil organisation The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). After its defeat in 2009, members of the Tamil diaspora were forced to find new strategies to relate to the LTTE and 'being …

  • Uprooted belonging

    E Gerharz, Corinna Land•ARTICLE•New Community•2018•Referencias: 10

A growing number of so-called indigenous ‘Jumma’ people from the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) in Bangladesh are migrating to New York City (NYC) in search of a ‘better life’, an attempt to escape from a situation defined largely by deprivation and exclusion. This paper asks how these migrants navigate the new terrain, which often does not comply with their expectations but instead fuels a deep sense of disappointment. It will be shown that their …

  • Spaces of Violence in South Asian Democracies

E Gerharz, Joanna Pfaff-Czarnecka•ARTICLE•Asian journal of social science•2017•Citada por: 1

This introduction discusses the emergence and consolidation of spaces of violence in South Asia’s democracies from both historical and conceptual perspectives. By revealing the varied experiences and experiments across the subcontinent, it invokes a perspective on democracy and democratic governance that refrains from following the assumptions of most of the democracy research to date, which frames such debates in predominantly normative terms. I…

  • Navigating Unpredictable Sites

    Open Access•E Gerharz•ARTICLE•Social Analysis•2017•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 25

This article discusses the relationship between the researcher and a field affected by armed conflict. Based on ethnographic research in Sri Lanka during the ceasefire of 2002, it investigates how deep polarization that emerges in the course of a violent conflict determines the researcher's scope for positioning vis-à-vis the different groups. The article argues that the unpredictibility of the research site necessitates careful navigation of the…

  • The Many Faces of the State

    Open Access•Nasir Uddin, E Gerharz•ARTICLE•Conflict and Society•2017•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 23

Reconsidering the trend in anthropology to conceptualize the multifaceted nature of the state and to focus on the local social dynamics beneath the institutional framework of the state, we argue that "state" is not a single governing entity but rather a multilayered body of practices at various levels of the society. We configure "state" as constructed, imagined, and negotiated by people in their everyday life in four dimensions: zones of limited…

  • Mobility aspirations and indigenous belonging among Chakma students in Dhaka

    Jacco Visser, E Gerharz•ARTICLE•South Asian History and Culture•2016•Referencias: 16

In recent decades, indigenous people from the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) in South-east Bangladesh have experienced increased social and spatial mobility. This article investigates how indigenous students from the CHT region who have migrated to Dhaka redefine indigenous belonging. By highlighting the juxtaposition of different forms of mobility (physical and social) the paper responds to a recent trend which has only rarely been the subject of …

  • Introduction. Land, 'Development' and 'Security' in Bangladesh and India

    Open Access•Katy Gardner, E Gerharz•ARTICLE•South Asia Multidisciplinary…•2016•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 67

This introduction to the volume addresses some of the complexities surrounding land acquisition in contemporary Bangladesh and India. By interrogating four conceptual issues concerning current land expropriation, we seek to develop some common ground and to reveal important questions addressed in the articles and beyond. First, we discuss recent theoretical approaches to dispossession and land loss and secondly, the ideological apparatus of conte…

  • Indigenous activism in Bangladesh

    E Gerharz•ARTICLE•Asian Ethnicity•2014•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 29

Taking the movement for the rights of indigenous people in Bangladesh as an example, this article elucidates how recent attempts to institutionalise the concept of indigenous people at the global level relate to local claims. These attempts are intrinsically interlinked to identity politics targeting the national political arena, and by adopting the conceptual offerings provided by the UN system as well as those from other parts of the world, act…

  • When Migrants Travel Back Home

    E Gerharz•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2010•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 12

This article looks at how social relations change when proximity is re‐established after a long period of separation. This theoretically inspired question is discussed in the case of Sri Lanka, where a peace process in 2002 enabled exiled Tamils to temporarily return to their ‘homeland’. The new mobility of these migrants constituted a significant momentum for the re‐negotiation of Tamil identity. Proximate relations resulting from mobility led t…

  • Zwischen Krieg und Frieden - Die Tamil Tigers und ihre Diaspora als Konfliktpartei und Entwicklungsakteur

    E Gerharz•ARTICLE•Sociologus•2009•Referencias: 6
