A practical gaze at the Warsaw Ghetto
Yael Hersonski’s Holocaust documentary A Film Unfinished has been read as an exercise in empathic unsettlement that destabilizes the propagandistic intentions of a Nazi gaze that produced footage of the Warsaw Ghetto. Temporal ideologies in uneven and combined development
Scholars exhibit a general self-reflexive tendency to purge Eurocentrism from UCD in order to strengthen the concept. Yet, unless the role of the cultural in UCD is adequately theorized, UCD cannot fully overcome Eurocentrism. The cult of Russianicity
This article argues that after the Russian presidential election in 2012, the Kremlin mobilised a populist, anti-fascist affect called ‘Russianicity’ that Vladimir Putin used to help legitimate his third term as president. This article also traces how this state-led effort intertwined with the consumer commodity cult known as ‘Putiniana’ which functioned as an index of changing public sentiment towards Putin. This article examines how the North Korean regime incorporated various aspects of foreign pop music into its own state-created pop band in order to re-direct desire back towards Kim Jong-un. Using Guy Debord's theory of the spectacle, this article argues that North Korea has successfully created a celebrity dictator who is able to negotiate the increasing presence of a potentially destabilizing foreign popular culture due to globalization
