  • The ‘wine revolution’ in the United States, 1960–1980

    Ai Hisano, Nathaniel G Chapman•ARTICLE•Business History•2023•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 85

This article examines the creation of product categories as a cultural construct. Categories serve not simply to classify different products but also to signify one’s taste. To examine how categories became embedded with cultural meanings, this article takes an interdisciplinary approach: the narrative analysis which has been employed by a number of business historians and the production of culture perspective used in sociology. By using the case…

  • Gendered Expectations, Gatekeeping, and Consumption in Craft Beer Spaces

    Open Access•Maggie Nanney, Nathaniel G Chapman et al.•ARTICLE•Humanity & Society•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 25

While women are drinking more craft beer in the United States, the association between masculinity and beer remains intact. Yet sparse research has considered how involvement in craft beer culture may differ across public and elite beer spaces. Public spaces are open settings such as bars or breweries, and elite settings are more closed settings such as bottle shares and beer clubs. In this article, we analyze a questionnaire of 1,102 craft beer …

  • The Culture of White Space

    Open Access•David L Brunsma, Nathaniel G Chapman et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2020•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 36

This article focuses on processes of meaning making in White spaces as the glue that holds their social structures together. Understanding White spaces and how they operate necessitates theoretical development from a cultural perspective. The authors' research empirically engages with a wide range of White spaces-neighborhoods, subcultural scenes, craft breweries, online digital platforms, and academia, to name a few-and do so from a theoretical …

  • The Culture of White Space, the Racialized Production of Meaning, and the Jamband Scene

    Open Access•David L Brunsma, J W Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•2020•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 39

This study critically examines the subculture of the jamband scene, particularly that of the band Phish, through the notion of 'white space.' We demonstrate the existence of colorblind racism and denial of white privilege in the white space of Phish subculture, which is also emblematic of the jamband subculture at large. This study utilizes content analysis drawing from social media comments that react to an article written by Headcount, a politi…

  • Bottling gender

    Nathaniel G Chapman, Megan Nanney et al.•ARTICLE•Food Culture & Society•2018•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 15

While beer has maintained a position as the most popular alcoholic beverage among men age 21–34, a recent Gallup poll indicates that craft beer has surpassed wine as the most popular beverage for women in the same age group in USA. In light of this trend, there has been little research done to explore gender dynamics in craft beer consumption and the craft beer industry. This paper seeks to understand the increasing popularity of craft beer among…

  • Racial Ideology in Electronic Dance Music Festival Promotional Videos

David L Brunsma, Nathaniel G Chapman et al.•CHAPTER•Race and Contention in…•2016

Black Studies are often disregarded as being pitifully parochial, brazenly polemical, and persistently pessimistic. Black academicians rooted in the Black Studies tradition often employ an epistemological framework that directly challenges colorblind ideologies of popular opinion. The mere inclusion of Black voices in mainstream media is not enough. Excluding racial experts from a Black Studies paradigm risks diminishing the complexity of racial …
