Procurement of Senonian Flint for Bladelets Production at the Early PPNB Site of Nahal Zahal in the Northern Negev Established for the First Time Using Chemical Composition Analysis
The hypotheses of Senonian flint to be a prime source of prehistoric “ chalcedony” flint artefacts from the Negev Desert (Israel) was not investigated in detail thus far. By combining trace‐element profiling with statistical interpretation, ten flint items from Nahal Zahal, an Early Pre‐Pottery Neolithic B site in the northern Negev, were compared with two nearby Eocene and Senonian outcrops, as well as nine extraction and reduction sites and out…
Nahal Zahal, an Early PPNB Site in the Northern Negev
The site of Nahal Zahal is located in Ramat Hovav (northern Negev). A salvage excavation carried out in March 2020 revealed an Early Pre-Pottery Neolithic B occupation (EPPNB; ca. 8600–8150 cal. BC), including at least one large, round structure with adjoining cells and installations, as well as a rich lithic assemblage. EPPNB evidence from the Negev is limited, including small hunter-gatherer occupations in and around the Negev Highlands (i.e., …
Nubian Levallois Technology During MIS 5
The site of Dimona South is a knapping locality in the Negev desert of Israel, situated at the raw material source. A test excavation followed by a salvage excavation conducted during 2020 revealed a partly buried archaeological layer that was exposed over an area of ~ 40 m 2 and yielded a well-preserved lithic assemblage. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages of sediments within and above the archaeological layer fall within MIS 5. With a…
Rediscovering Geula Cave
Personal ornaments from Hayonim and Manot caves (Israel) hint at symbolic ties between the Levantine and the European Aurignacian
Situated at the crossroads of Africa and Eurasia, the Levant is a crucial region for understanding the origins and spread of Upper Paleolithic (UP) traditions associated with the spread of modern humans. Of the two local Early Upper Paleolithic technocomplexes, the Ahmarian and the Levantine Aurignacian, the latter appears to be unique in the endemic UP sequence, exhibiting greater similarity to the West European 'classic' Aurignacian than to the…
Site formation processes at Manot Cave, Israel
A technotypological analysis of the Ahmarian and Levantine Aurignacian assemblages from Manot Cave (area C) and the interrelation with site formation processes
Early Upper Paleolithic human foot bones from Manot Cave, Israel
Preliminary observations on the Levantine Aurignacian sequence of Manot Cave
Firing up the furnace
Chrono-cultural Considerations of Middle Paleolithic Occurrences at Manot Cave (Western Galilee), Israel
Radiocarbon chronology of Manot Cave, Israel and Upper Paleolithic dispersals
Manot Cave radiocarbon dates establish Levantine chronology, which is critical for understanding Upper Paleolithic dispersals.
