  • Utility of osteon circularity for determining species and interpreting load history in primates and nonprimates

    Open Access•Kendra E Keenan, Chad S Mears et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2017•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 117

OBJECTIVES: Histomorphological analyses of bones are used to estimate an individual's chronological age, interpret a bone's load history, and differentiate species. Among various histomorphological characteristics that can influence mechanical properties of cortical bone, secondary osteon (Haversian system) population density and predominant collagen fiber orientation are particularly important. Cross-sectional shape characteristics of secondary …

  • Scaling of Haversian canal surface area to secondary osteon bone volume in ribs and limb bones

    Open Access•John G Skedros, Alex N Knight et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2013•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 87

Studies of secondary osteons in ribs have provided a great deal of what is known about remodeling dynamics. Compared with limb bones, ribs are metabolically more active and sensitive to hormonal changes, and receive frequent low‐strain loading. Optimization for calcium exchange in rib osteons might be achieved without incurring a significant reduction in safety factor by disproportionally increasing central canal size with increased osteon size (…

  • The artiodactyl calcaneus as a potential 'control bone' cautions against simple interpretations of trabecular bone adaptation in the anthropoid femoral neck

    Open Access•Kristofer D Sinclair, Ryan W Farnsworth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2013•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 103

  • A weighted osteon morphotype score outperforms regional osteon percent prevalence calculations for interpreting cortical bone adaptation

    Open Access•John G Skedros, Casey J Kiser et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2011•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 42

Using circularly polarized light microscopy, we described a weighted‐scoring method for quantifying regional distributions of six secondary osteon morphotypes (Skedros et al.: Bone 44 (2009) 392–403). This osteon morphotype score (MTS) strongly correlated with “tension” and “compression” cortices produced by habitual bending. In the present study, we hypothesized that the osteon MTS is superior to a relatively simpler method based on the percent …
