Tracking Late Holocene climate change and the 1908 Tunguska impact event from lake sediments in Central Siberia
We studied a 2200-year-old sediment core from Lake Zapovednoye, a small, deep, freshwater lake near the site of the 1908 Tunguska impact event. Analysis of the sediment core for geochemistry, pollen, chironomids, Cladocera, and diatoms revealed traces of climatic fluctuations during the investigated time period during which a cool climate before 1000 CE was replaced by the Medieval Climatic Optimum, the Little Ice Age, and finally the modern warm…

Application of Macrocharcoal Analysis in Archaeolog
This article discusses the method for analyzing macroscopic charcoal (larger than 100 μm) as a key archaeological and paleoecological tool for reconstructing the history of fires and fuel use strategies among ancient people. Despite its relative fragility, charcoal, which was emerged from incomplete combustion of organic matter, can be found in sediments up to a million years old and is highly preservable in various environments. Over the last 50…
The Bronze Age of the Altai
This article presents a reconstruction of climate and landscapes of the Altai during the Bronze Age. The study was done because of a chronological gap for the sites in the Altai Mountains in the second millennium BC, whereas a continuous cultural sequence can be observed in the adjacent forest-steppe areas. A paleolimnological approach which was applied was based on comprehensive analysis of bottom sediments from eleven lakes in the Russian and M…
First Application of Sedimentary Plant DNA Analysis in Reconstruction of the Holocene Vegetation in the Altai
This study presents a detailed comparison of plant community composition using both spore-pollen analysis and sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA) metabarcoding. The Holocene-age sediments from Lake Balyktukel (Ulagan Plateau, Altai Republic) were analyzed. The comparison revealed significant differences in the composition and proportion of dominant taxa, highlighting the distinct spatial coverage and sensitivity of each method. Coprophilous Fungi as an Indicator of Grazing Pressure and Population Density in the Uvs Nuur Basin (Mongolia) over the Past Three Millennia
Spores of coprophilous fungi are well preserved in various paleoarchives, including bottom sediments in lakes. The coprophilous fungi spend part of their life cycle on the dung of herbivorous animals, where they produce spores. Due to this feature, the coprophilous fungi are used as a qualitative indicator of the presence and density of the population using domestic livestock. This paper is aimed at testing the hypothesis that fluctuations in the…
Cave Archaeological Sites as an Object of Palynological Reconstructions
Cave sites often become objects of palynological reconstructions; however, the question of the representativeness of cave deposits for palynological researches in connection with the specifics of the distribution and burial of pollen grains in the caves is currently relevant and insufficiently studied. This article provides the results of a palynological study of surface samples from three sites: Strashnaya, Chagyrskaya, and Biyka-1 caves (Altai …
Reconstruction of Fire Activity in Kulunda Steppe for the Last 3500 Years Based on the Data from the Bottom Sediments of Lake Maloe Yarovoe
For several millennia, Kulunda has been inhabited by the peoples with different types of economy, but the paleoecological aspect of their habitation has remained understudied. The most promising source of paleoecological information is natural archives of lake sediments. This article presents the first results of studying macro-charcoals in the sediment core from Lake Maloe Yarovoe. Fire conditions for the last 3500 years and type of fuel (wood o…
The link between climate change and biodiversity of lacustrine inhabitants and terrestrial plant communities of the Uvs Nuur Basin (Mongolia) during the last three millennia
The paper is focused on changes in biodiversity, the environment, and human activity in the Uvs Nuur Basin during the last three millennia based on biological and geochemical proxies from the lake Bayan Nuur. Regions with high biodiversity and relatively low anthropogenic pressures are typically the most vulnerable to both climate change and human activities. One such area is the Uvs Nuur Basin located on the north of the Great Lake Depression of…
Dietary evidence from Central Asian Neanderthals
Neanderthals are known primarily from their habitation of Western Eurasia, but they also populated large expanses of Northern Asia for thousands of years. Owing to a sparse archaeological record, relatively little is known about these eastern Neanderthal populations. Unlike in their western range, there are limited zooarchaeological and paleobotanical studies that inform us about the nature of their subsistence. Here, we perform a combined analys…
A Connection Between the Settlement Dynamic of the Eastern Pamir and Paleoclimatic Changes in the Late Glacial and Holocene
This article is devoted to a review of the data on the chronology of the occupation of the Eastern Pamirs high-lands and the paleoecological reconstructions. At this moment it is known that there are two main episodes of the settlement of the region in the Final Pleistocene – Middle Holocene: 12–8 ka BP. (the main archaeological sites are the Istyk cave and the Kurteke grotto) and 8–6 thousand years ago (Oshkhona, Shakhty, Istykskaya cave, Kurtek…
Ice Complex formation on Bol'shoy Lyakhovsky Island (New Siberian Archipelago, East Siberian Arctic) since about 200 ka
Late Quaternary landscapes of unglaciated Beringia were largely shaped by ice-wedge polygon tundra. Ice Complex (IC) strata preserve such ancient polygon formations. Here we report on the Yukagir IC from Bol'shoy Lyakhovsky Island in northeastern Siberia and suggest that new radioisotope disequilibria ( 230 Th/U) dates of the Yukagir IC peat confirm its formation during the Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 7a–c interglacial period. The preservat…
