  • Holocene vegetation dynamics of the Koobi Fora Basin, East Turkana, Kenya

    Open Access•Rahab Kinyanjui, Husna K Mashaka et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026•Referencias: 65

The Koobi Fora Basin is renowned for its rich paleontological and archaeological record. Despite extensive study of earlier periods the Holocene (∼11,7000 years ago to present) sedimentary record, the Galana Boi Formation, remains understudied. This Formation preserves a record of lake-level fluctuation, environmental shifts, and the appearance of the first herders in eastern Africa around ∼5000 years ago. Here we examine Holocene vegetation chan…

  • Modern African ecosystems as landscape-scale analogues for reconstructing woody cover and early hominin environments

  • Presenting the AfriArch Isotopic Database

Open Access•T Goldstein, Steven Goldstein et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Open Archaeology Data•2022

AfriArch is an archaeological and paleoenvironmental data community designed to integrate datasets related to human-environmental interactions in Holocene Africa. Here we present a dataset of bioarchaeological stable isotope (C/N/O) and radiocarbon measurements from African archaeological sites spanning the Holocene. Modern measurements, when reported together with archaeological data in original publications, are also included. The dataset consi…

  • Buffering new risks? Environmental, social and economic changes in the Turkana Basin during and after the African Humid Period

    Open Access•E A Hildebrand, Katherine M Grillo et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 56

This paper evaluates risk-oriented frameworks for explaining environmental, social, and economic changes faced by fishing and herding communities in the Turkana Basin during and after the African Humid Period (AHP, 15–5 ka). The orbitally-forced AHP created moist conditions, high lake levels, and unusual hydrological connections across much of northern and eastern Africa. As arid conditions set in and rainfall decreased between 5.3 and 3.9 ka in …

  • Stable isotopic variation in tropical forest plants for applications in primatology

    Open Access•Scott A Blumenthal, Jessica M Rothman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2016

Stable isotope analysis is a promising tool for investigating primate ecology although nuanced ecological applications remain challenging, in part due to the complex nature of isotopic variability in plant-animal systems. The aim of this study is to investigate sources of carbon and nitrogen isotopic variation at the base of primate food webs that reflect aspects of primate ecology. The majority of primates inhabit tropical forest ecosystems, whi…

  • Dietary changes of large herbivores in the Turkana Basin, Kenya from 4 to 1 Ma

    Open Access•Thure E Cerling, Samuel A Andanje et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2015

Significance Stable carbon isotopes give diet information for both modern and fossil mammals and can be used to classify diets as C 4 grazers, C 3 –C 4 mixed, or C 3 browsers. We show that diets of some major African herbivore lineages have significantly changed over the past 4 million years by comparing fossils from the Turkana Basin in Kenya with modern mammals from East and Central Africa. Some fossil assemblages have no modern analogues in Ea…
