Validation of Rosenberg self-esteem scale among Norwegian adolescents – psychometric properties across samples
The psychometric properties of the RSES need to be further evaluated in Norwegian adolescent populations based on the dimensionality found in the present study; however overall, the results indicate that the instrument is appropriate for assessing self-esteem among Norwegian adolescents
The Role of Stress Experience and Demographic Factors for Satisfaction with Life in Norwegian Adolescents
This study supports the relatively high and stable level of LS in adolescents across the investigated time points. Demographic factors were moreover weakly associated with LS. The findings also contribute by showing the significant role of interpersonal and school-related stressors in association with LS
Sense of Coherence in Association with Stress Experience and Health in Adolescents
This study investigated the associations between sex, age, socio-economic status, stress, sense of coherence (SOC), and health (mental wellbeing, depressive symptoms, self-rated health, and subjective health complaints) in Norwegian adolescents aged 13-19 years. Furthermore, the study investigated the potential protective or compensatory role from SOC on the association between stress and health. Methods: The study was based on a cross-sectional …
Reorienting Norwegian mental healthcare services
Reorientation of healthcare services towards more efficient health promotion interventions is an urgent matter. Despite policies and guidelines being in place, it is the least developed key action area of the Ottawa charter. User involvement, or the voice of the patient, is missing from the knowledge base of health promotion in the mental healthcare services. The aim of this study was to add experiential knowledge from former patients. We explore…
Ten Lessons for Good Practice for the Inherit Triple Win
The world's challenges of climate change, damage to ecosystems, and social and health inequalities require changes in human behaviours at every level of organisation, among governments, business, communities, and individuals. An important question is how behaviour change can be enabled and supported at the scale and speed required. The research reported in this paper describes important lessons for good practice in changing contexts to modify beh…
Addressing Inequity
Green space areas offer several benefits that support our physical, psychological, and social health. However, the level of engagement with green space areas may not be the same across population groups. Using a mixed-method research design, we investigated the use of a green space area and whether and how the area was beneficial for health, social inclusion, and physical activity for all socioeconomic groups in a suburban area in Norway. The stu…
The Inherit Model
The need for analysis and action across the interrelated domains of human behaviors and lifestyles, environmental sustainability, health and inequality is increasingly apparent. Currently, these areas are often not considered in conjunction when developing policies or interventions, introducing the potential for suboptimal or conflicting outcomes. The INHERIT model has been developed within the EU-funded project INHERIT as a tool to guide thinkin…

Positive mental health literacy
A valid and reliable one-dimensional instrument measuring knowledge of factors promoting good mental health among adolescents was developed. The instrument has the potential to complement current measures of MHL and may be useful when planning mental health promotion activities and evaluating public mental health education initiatives in adolescents
Is there an association between food patterns and life satisfaction among Norway's inhabitants ages 65 years and older
The lack of information regarding older adults' health and lifestyles makes it difficult to design suitable interventions for people at risk of developing unhealth lifestyles. Therefore, there is a need to increase knowledge about older adults' food patterns and quality of life. Our aim was to determine associations among food patterns, anxiety, depression, and life satisfaction in Norwegian inhabitants ages 65+. The Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (…
Religiousness and Social Support
Previous research has shown that religiousness is related to social support, but most studies on this subject have been conducted in highly religious contexts. In the secular culture of Norway, we investigated the level of perceived social support among religious and non-religious individuals using the scale from the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey. Of the 3,000 randomly selected persons aged 18-75 years, 653 (22 %) participated in t…
Do Optimism and Pessimism Mediate the Relationship Between Religious Coping and Existential Well-Being? Examining Mechanisms in a Norwegian Population Sample
In the secular context of Norway, we investigated the mediating roles of both optimism and pessimism in the relationship between six dimensions of religious coping as measured by the Religious Coping Activities Scale (RCOPE) and existential well-being (EWB). The moderating effect of long-standing health problems on these relationships was also examined. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2009 among Norwegians 18 to 75 years of age. Resul…
Self-esteem and life satisfaction in adolescents—gender and age as potential moderators
Trends in absolute and relative educational inequalities in four modifiable ischaemic heart disease risk factors
Widening absolute educational inequalities in smoking and diabetes over the last three decades gives rise to concern. The mechanisms behind these results are less clear, and future studies are needed to assess if educational inequalities in secondary prevention of IHD are larger compared to educational inequalities in primary prevention of IHD. Continued monitoring of IHD risk factors at the population level is therefore warranted. The results em…

Work-home conflict and facilitation across four different family structures in Norway
The purpose of this study was to examine how work–home conflict and facilitation vary among people living in different family structures in Norway, here conceptualized as: two-parent families; single parents; childless couples; and singles. The study used data from a Norwegian study on occupational health (N=2414). We hypothesized that respondents living in two-parent families experience more work–home conflict and facilitation than others due to…

Peripheral Visions? A Cross-cultural Study of Rural Youths' Views on Migration
This study sets out to investigate anticipatory views concerning out-migration amongst rural youth. Utilising three age-group samples from rural Norway, Scotland and Sweden, young people were classified as prospective 'stayers', 'leavers' or 'returners'. Both qualitative and quantitative data show that 'stayers' see themselves as most contented with rurality. 'Leavers' are most negative to rural living. 'Returners', though also critical about rur…
Leisure transitions - a rural perspective
The paper examines leisure focal theory from a cross-cultural perspective by utilizing adolescent samples from rural Norway, Scotland and Sweden. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to explore the robustness of the model across countries. Results revealed effects of both culture and rurality on the patterns of adolescents' leisure transitions, and these were discussed in relation to the original theoretical framework
The Type A/B Behaviour Pattern in Samples of Urban and Rural Men
The present study assessed the prevalence of the Type A behaviour pattern in a rural and an urban sample of men in Norway. The study was carried through on data collected for other purposes, reported earlier in 1998 and 1999, to evaluate whether there were differences in Type A behaviour pattern between the two environmental settings. The Type A behaviour pattern was assessed in both studies using the Jenkins Activity Survey. Analysis of the data…
Associations among Behavior, Personality, and Traditional Risk Factors for Coronary Heart Disease
The continuing presence of different negative emotions has been suggested as an important factor in the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). The present study was carried out at a medical center to investigate the presence of negative emotions and Type A behavior in a group of 40-yr.-old men and women. The National Institute of Public Health in Norway carried out the data-collection as a part of their CHD risk factor screenings. The corre…
Associations Among Behavior, Personality, and Traditional Risk Factors for Coronary Heart Disease
The Type 2 Construct and its Relation to Coronary Heart Disease
The main aim of this study was to scrutinize the link postulated in 1988 between the Type 2 construct of Grossarth-Maticek, Eysenck, and Vetter and the incidence of coronary heart disease. Self-report data were collected from 58 men who had suffered an infarct, had been hospitalised, and had later enrolled at a physical outpatient clinic as well as from a randomly assigned control group of 70 men. Analysis showed that the Type 2 scores in the inf…
