  • Mortgage Borrowing and Chronic Disease Outcomes in Older Age

    Open Access•Alec P Rhodes, Stephanie Moulton et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2024•Referencias: 8

Many older adults are not able or willing to liquidate housing wealth, and the ability to borrow also depends on changes in home values. Thus, housing wealth is not a uniform social determinant of health but is shaped by older adults' participation in financial markets

  • Managing the onset of a new disease in older age

  • Debt Stress and Debt Illusion

    Open Access•Donald R Haurin, Stephanie Moulton et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2020•Referencias: 3

Reverse mortgage debt causes a complex stress response. Stress per dollar of debt is lower for reverse than standard mortgages 4 years after origination. However, reverse mortgages' loan balance grows over time causing total stress to increase, while stress from a standard mortgage decreases as it is repaid. If an older adult uses reverse mortgage funds to repay consumer debt then total stress is reduced

  • The Relationship Between Reverse Mortgage Borrowing, Domain and Life Satisfaction

    Open Access•Cäzilia Loibl, Donald R Haurin et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2018•Referencias: 9

Our study provides new knowledge about the longer-term outcomes of reverse mortgage borrowers. The positive association of reverse mortgage borrowing for housing and financial satisfaction and, in turn, general satisfaction, provides insights regarding borrower experiences with this controversial financial tool

  • What affects children’s outcomes

    Steven C Bourassa, Donald R Haurin et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2016•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 30

We study the impact of housing conditions on the educational outcomes of young persons in Switzerland. We focus on children aged 15–19, who are potentially enrolled in or graduates of high school or vocational training programs, and young adults aged 20–24, who are potentially students in or graduates of university or other tertiary institutions. Housing conditions are characterized in three ways: whether the parents rent or own the dwelling, the…

  • Does Homeownership Affect Child Outcomes?

    Open Access•Donald R Haurin, Toby L Parcel et al.•ARTICLE•Real Estate Economics•2002

We study the impact of homeowning on the cognitive and behavioral outcomes of children. Using four waves of a comprehensive national panel data set, we control for many social, demographic and economic variables previously found to influence child outcomes. The data are a panel, allowing us to control for unobserved household– and child–specific factors. We use a treatment effects model to address the issue of possible sample selection bias cause…

  • The Impact of Real Rents and Wages on Household Formation

Donald R Haurin, Patric H Hendershott et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1993

Although the economic literature has analyzed some components of the headship decision, study of household formation has been primarily in the realm of demography. The authors expand the demographic model to include economic determinants of the decision to remain with parents or not and to live with a group or separately. They focus on measuring the effect of spatial variations in rental costs on the probability of forming a household. The author…

  • Women's Labor Market Reactions to Family Disruptions

    Donald R Haurin•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1989

Measuring the labor-force response of a woman to changes in her husband's earnings is the goal of this dynamic model. Allowing for uncertainty, the model modifies the constant shadow price of initial assests framework so that the shadow price varies over time. It is shown that the change in a woman's labor supply is related to the deviation of the husband's actual work hours from the expected amount. The estimation indicates that the largest resp…
