    Carolyn H Marcus, Catherine D Michelson et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2022

PURPOSE: Coaching in medical education is increasingly used for trainee development for a variety of skills, including improving trainee teaching skills through resident-as-teacher programs. Faculty who serve as coaches commit significant effort to the coaching role, often without protected time or support. Little is known about faculty motivations to participate in coaching programs or how the coaching experience affects the faculty. This study …

NHS Direct is a relatively new, nurse-based, 24-hour health advice line run as part of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). The service delivers health advice remotely via the telephone. A central aspect of the service is the attempt to provide a standard level of health advice regardless of time, space or the background of the nurse. At the heart of this attempt is an innovative health software called CLINICAL ASSESSMENT SYSTEM (CAS). Using a…

    Open Access•David Greatbatch, Gerard Hanlon et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2005•Citada por: 23•Referencias: 13

This paper reports on a qualitative study of the use of an expert system developed for the British telephone triage service NHS Direct. This system, known as CAS, is designed to standardise and control the interaction between NHS Direct nurses and callers. The paper shows, however, that in practice the nurses use CAS in a range of ways and, in so doing, privilege their own expertise and deliver an individualised service. The paper concludes by ar…

  • Risk and the Responsible Health Consumer

    Open Access•J Goode, David Greatbatch et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Social Policy•2004•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 9

NHS Direct, the 24-hour telephone helpline, uses modern communications technology to offer easier and faster access to advice about health, illness and the NHS so that people are better able to care for themselves and their families. In-depth interviews with callers to the service show that they bring with them discourses of the ‘deserving’ and ‘ undeserving’ familiar in the provision of other welfare services. The figure of the ‘time-waster’ is …

  • Male Callers to NHS Direct

Open Access•J Goode, Gerard Hanlon et al.•ARTICLE•Health An Interdisciplinary…•2004•Referencias: 15

It has been suggested in the light of mortality and morbidity rates, and men's reluctance to seek medical help and advice, that there is a crisis in men's health. Little is known about men's experiences of using health care services, despite an emergent UK men's health movement. NHS Direct, the new telephone advice line, was designed to be more accessible, convenient and responsive to the public's needs for health care. In-depth interviews with m…

  • The Downright Torture of Women

    Open Access•Donna Luff•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2001•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 21

Apparent alliances between moral campaigners and certain feminists in opposition to pornography have been the subject of discussion both in the United States and in Britain. Drawing on a wider study of the views of women in British moral and pro-family organisations, this article examines the attitudes of such women to pornography. It then compares these views with those of anti-pornography feminists, commenting in particular on the moral reasoni…

  • Dialogue Across the Divides

    Open Access•Donna Luff•ARTICLE•Sociology•1999•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 13

The article describes the dilemmas raised in conducting a feminist research project with `anti-feminist' women. Drawing on a qualitative study of the perspectives of women in the British moral lobby, the author raises questions about the applicability of the existing feminist methodological literature to research with relatively powerful and potentially hostile women. In particular, a discussion of interview rapport in terms of `moments' of under…
