Is Islam Easy to Understand or Not: Salafis, the Democratization of Interpretation and the Need for the Ulema
Both in the modern period and historically, Salafism has been associated with autodidacticism and an assertion that Islam’s scriptures are clear and accessible to ordinary Muslims without the mediation of the ulema. Indeed, Salafi writings often confirm this impression. In contrast, however, both in the pre-modern and modern settings, in both their writings and lessons, leading scholars associated with Salafism have insisted on the need for the M…
Faithful Dissenters: Sunni Skepticism about the Miracles of Saints
Belief in the miracles of saints ( karāmāt al-awliyā ʾ) is a requirement in Sunni Islam. Challenges to this position are generally seen as limited to Islamic modernists affected by Western historical criticism. This article demonstrates that there have actually been leading Sunni Muslim scholars from the fourth/tenth century until the modern period who held positions regarding the miracles of saints that were much more skeptical than the mainstre…
The Canonization of Ibn Mâjah: Authenticity vs. Utility in the Formation of the Sunni Ḥadîth Canon
In Sunni Islam, the canonical ‘Six Books’ of hadith derive their authority as doctrinal references from scholarly consensus on their reliability as representations of the Prophet’s Sunna. One of the Six Boooks, the Sunan of Ibn Majah, however, presents a bizarre exception. Although it has been considered part of the Six Book collection since the late eleventh century, it has been consistently and severely criticized by Sunni scholars for the larg…
Encyclopedia of Canonical Hadith * by G. H. A. Juynboll
G. H. A. Juynboll's contribution to the Western study of the ḥadīth tradition has been substantial and groundbreaking. From his earliest book on twentieth-century Egyptian debates over the authenticity and proper function of ḥadīth (The Authenticity of the Tradition Literature: Discussions in Modern Egypt, Brill, 1969) to a myriad of articles dealing with subjects from mass transmission (tawātur) to unnaturally old transmitters (muʿammarūn) and c…

Criticism of the Proto-Hadith Canon: Al-daraqutni's Adjustment of the Sahihayn
Although in modern times the Sahih Hadith collections of Muhammad b. Ismail al-Bukhari (d. 256/870) and Muslim b. al-Hajjaj (d. 261/875) have achieved canonical status in the Islamic world, Muslims studying the Prophetic legacy have a long tradition of criticizing these authoritative compilations. The most salient and influential critique has been the Kitab al-ilzamat wa-l-tatabbu', ‘The Book of Suggested Additions and Revisions,’ of 'Ali b. 'Uma…
