What Explains Patrilineal Cooperation
Evolutionary anthropologists have proposed that unilineal kinship promotes collective action and that patriliny occurs when the reproductive payoff from passing wealth to sons is greater than that for daughters. We assess both of these theoretical perspectives as well as indirect reciprocity and kin selection as possible contributors to patrilineal cooperation in the Dogon of Mali. The mean coefficient of relatedness for males (N = 4,724) in 31 D…
Alternatives to the Grandmother Hypothesis
Stress and female reproductive function
We report here on a longitudinal study of stress and women's reproduction in a small Kaqchikel Mayan community in rural Guatemala. Current understanding of the effects of stress on the reproductive axis in women is mostly derived from clinical studies of individual stressors. Little is known, however, about the cumulative effects of "real life" stress. Cortisol increases in response to a broad variety of individual stressors (Tilbrook et al., 200…
How to measure reproductive success
To date there have been few empirical comparisons between alternative methods for measuring reproductive success (RS). We consider the pros and cons of alternative measures of RS to provide guidance for the design of field studies in human behavioral ecology. We compare cross‐sectional measures that count offspring alive at the time of the interview and retrospective measures that require data on offspring age at death or censoring. We consider a…
Ecological Constraints on Marriage in Rural Ireland
Predictors of fecundability and conception waits among the Dogon of Mali
Surprisingly little is known about the mechanisms that underlie variation in female fertility in humans. Data on this topic are nonetheless vital to a number of pragmatic and theoretical enterprises, including population planning, infertility treatment and prevention, and evolutionary ecology. Here we study female fertility by focusing on one component of the interbirth interval: the waiting time to conception during menstrual cycling. Our study …
Polygyny as a Risk Factor for Child Mortality among the Dogon
The Biology of Menstruation in Homo Sapiens
Energy economy in the evolution of menstruation
Compared with other aspects of mammalian reproductive physiology, we know surprisingly little about menstruation. Medical research has illuminated many of the proximate mechanisms that bring menstruation about, but has left us in the dark as to why menstruation evolved. Evolutionary anthropology provides the expertise in primatology and evolutionary biology needed to shift the emphasis in this field from How to Why.
