Twelve millennia of plant use in the Northwest Amazon
Cerro Montoya 1 (CM1), in the Serranía de La Lindosa (Guaviare, Colombia), preserves one of the longest and most detailed multi-proxy archaeobotanical sequences in north-western Amazonia, spanning from the Late Pleistocene (∼12.6 cal ka BP) to the early Colonial period (∼0.4 cal ka BP). Integrated analyses of plant macroremains, phytoliths, starch grains, and charred parenchyma reveal a remarkably stable, broad-spectrum subsistence strategy from …
‘A World of Knowledge’
There are tens of thousands of painted rock art motifs in the Serranía de la Lindosa in the Colombian Amazon, including humans, animals, therianthropes, geometrics, and flora. For most of the last 100 years, inaccessibility and political unrest has limited research activities in the region. In this paper, we discuss findings from six years of field research and consider the role of rock art as a manifestation of Indigenous ontologies. By employin…
Animals of the Serranía de la Lindosa
The Serranía de la Lindosa in the Colombian Amazon hosts one of the most spectacular global rock art traditions. Painted in vibrant ochre pigments, the artwork depicts abstract and figurative designs – including a high diversity of animal motifs – and holds key information for understanding how Amazonians made sense of their world. We compare a zooarchaeological assemblage with painted depictions of animals at the Cerro Azul site, and utilise rel…
The stone connection
Formentera was one of the last Mediterranean islands to be colonized by humans at the end of the third millennium BC. This island is rather small (83¿km2) with marked biogeographical constraints. Typical of a semi-arid environment, the island is poor in resources and biodiversity. Macrolithic tools from the prehistoric sites of Ca na Costa (ca. 2130¿1790 cal BC), Cap de Barbaria II (ca. 1740¿900 cal BC), and Sa Cala (ca. 800¿570 cal BC) showed si…
Tabladito
Colonisation and early peopling of the Colombian Amazon during the Late Pleistocene and the Early Holocene
Dietary continuity and change at Panama Viejo from an interdisciplinary perspective, C. 600–1671
The study of food consumption during the colonial period in Panama Viejo traditionally has been based on chronicles and archival documentation. The present analysis reassesses the historical information about diet in this colonial enclave based on microbotanical, isotopic and bioanthropological evidence obtained from the excavations within and outside the remains of the old city’s Cathedral in two locations and four chronological periods to compl…
Moving South
The role of plants in early human migrations across the globe has received little attention compared to big game hunting. Tropical forests in particular have been seen as a barrier for Late Pleistocene human dispersals due to perceived difficulties in obtaining sufficient subsistence resources. Archaeobotanical data from the Cerro Azul rock outcrop in the Colombian Amazon details Late Pleistocene plant exploitation providing insight into early hu…
Advances in Morphometrics in Archaeobotany
Morphometric analysis offers an alternative or augmentation to traditional archaeobotanical methods to address differences within and between plant species and their remains, refining and enhancing taxonomic resolution. Morphometrics, the measurement of size and shape, and the multivariate statistical analysis of generated quantitative variables, have long played a major role in biological research, including plant taxonomy and systematics, altho…
Comparisons between methods for analyzing dental calculus samples from El Mirador cave (Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain)
The origins and early development of plant food production and farming in Colombian tropical forests
Niche construction and optimal foraging theory in Neotropical agricultural origins
Surviving on the isle of Formentera (Balearic Islands)
Multidisciplinary studies on the human–environment interaction during the initial peopling of the Americas
The role of plants in the early human settlement of Northwest South America
Radiocarbon chronology of terminal Pleistocene to middle Holocene human occupation in the Middle Cauca Valley, Colombia
C data and the early colonization of Northwest South America
In the 1960s Reichel Dolmatoff applied the evolutionary model of the American archeology to order the prehispanic record in Colombia. Nonetheless, the Archaic period was loosely defined because of the lack of data existing at the time. Fifty years after that things have changed and we now have robust evidences to be able to understand this key period in the prehispanic history, characterized by its cultural diversity and the adaptive strategies p…
Lithic Technology Studies in Colombia During the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene
This paper provides an overview of the lithic technology of human groups that inhabited Colombian territory between the Late Pleistocene and the early Holocene. The chosen methodology was to document and compare the lithic technology regionally, in order to show the differences in theoretical and methodological approaches applied
The initial human settlement of Northwest South America during the Pleistocene/Holocene transition
Pre-Hispanic horticulture in the Paraná Delta (Argentina)
Many American cultivated species have been domesticated in the Neotropical Lowlands. While the southern limit of some cultivars (e.g. maize) is relatively well known for the Andean Region, the south-western limit of lowland horticulture has been poorly established in South America. Sixteenth-century European accounts mentioned the presence of cultivated plants in the Delta of the Paraná River, but until now this had not been confirmed by direct a…

Mobility strategies in Colombia's middle mountain range between the early and middle Holocene
This article is about the mobilityof hunter-gatherers and cultivators, who inhabited two regions of mountain rainforest in the Cordillera Central of Colombia between the early and middle Holocene. It aims to demonstrate that in tropical rainforests mobility is a more effective economic and social strategy than sedentary settlement. Given the poor soils and low carrying capacity of these environments, mobility provides a strategy which allows for …
