OBJECTIVES: To analyse the associations between socio-economic status (SES), measured using occupation, and self-reported health, and to examine the contribution of various material, occupational and psychosocial factors to social inequalities in health in Europe. METHODS: This study was based on data from the European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) carried out in 2003. The total sample consisted of 6038 and 6383 working men and women in 28 countr…

    Open Access•P Naysmith, G T Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 5

In 2003, a National Electrostatics Corporation (NEC) 5MV tandem accelerator mass spectrometer was installed at SUERC, providing the radiocarbon laboratory with 14 C measurements to 4–5‰ repeatability. In 2007, a 250kV single-stage accelerator mass spectrometer (SSAMS) was added to provide additional 14 C capability and is now the preferred system for 14 C analysis. Changes to the technology and to our operations are evident in our copious quality…

  • Water Contamination Emergencies: Can We Cope?

    R Anderson, D E Huffman et al.•BOOK•Water Contamination Emergencies•2007

Contamination of water supplies, whether by chemical, biological or radioactive agents, requires a rapid and effective response in order to reduce or avoid impact on the environment or consumers. Using seven major incident case studies (including the Milwaukee Cryptosporidium incident, Chernobyl and the UK Foot and Mouth outbreak), Water Contamination Emergencies: Can We Cope? looks at the complete handling of emergency incidents relating to wate…

    R Anderson, R D Anderson•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2006

The University of Greifswald, on the Baltic coast, is one of the smaller and less well-known German universities. For centuries it was under Swedish control, until Pomerania became part of Prussia in 1815. The collection of essays edited by Werner Buchhholz is the result of a colloquium which sought to place Greifswald within the historical development of the Prussian university ‘landscape’, and is therefore of more than local interest. It relate…

  • Preliminary Results for the Extraction and Measurement of Cosmogenic in Situ 14 C from Quartz

    Open Access•P Naysmith, G T Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 5

Radiocarbon is produced within minerals at the earth's surface (in situ production) by a number of spallation reactions. Its relatively short half-life of 5730 yr provides us with a unique cosmogenic nuclide tool for the measurement of rapid erosion rates (>10 −3 cm yr −1 ) and events occurring over the past 25 kyr. At SUERC, we have designed and built a vacuum system to extract 14 C from quartz which is based on a system developed at the Univers…

  • Sources of Anthropogenic 14 C to the North Sea

    Open Access•P Gulliver, G T Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 13

The Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing plant on the northwest coast of England is the largest source of anthropogenic radiocarbon to the UK coastal environment. In a mid-1990s study of 14 C distribution around the UK coast, the pattern of dilution with increasing distance from Sellafield appeared to be perturbed by anomalously high 14 C activities in marine biota in the coastal environment of northeast England. This present study was undertaken…

A new National Electrostatic Corporation (NEC) 5MV accelerator mass spectrometer became operational at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) in July 2002. It has 2 Cs sputter negative ion sources: a 134-sample source (S1) for the routine measurement of all species, and a hybrid source (S2) with 40 spaces for radiocarbon measurements with either graphite or CO 2 samples. A number of performance tests on graphite samples h…

    Lee Badger, L W Badger et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1994

This study was undertaken in order to better understand the detection of depression by primary care physicians. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between information gathered during the course of the medical interview and the subsequent diagnosis of depression. Forty-seven community-based primary care physicians, unaware of the mental health focus of this research, were videotaped in the office setting, as they interviewed two "typic…

This paper presents an investigation of the research methods curriculum in public sector sociology courses. It is based on an analysis of CNAA course documents for degrees in sociology and the social sciences, and undertaken with the aim of contributing to the current debate on the content of the undergraduate curriculum in sociology. The survey results suggest several trends in curricular policy: in particular an increasing emphasis on practical…

    K Anderson, Kim A Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Telos•1985•Citada por: 1

To subject the international human rights movement to a purely theoretical critique cannot help but suggest a certain mean-spiritedness. After all, no one knows better than those in the front lines of human rights work exactly what, in terms of lives lost and atrocities suffered, the movement has been unable to achieve.
