Individual Heterogeneity and State Dependence
In this paper I examine the evolution of an idea: that differences between statistical relationships and the observations on which they are based, or disturbances, may have meaning and structure and that such meaning and structure must be taken into account despite the fact that they arise from unobservables. When working with micro data, principal unobservables arise from individual heterogeneity which may occur in part from path dependence. My …

Household and Economy
This book is about socially optimal population size and the social consequences of individual choice with respect to family size within each generation; it examines the general equilibrium implications of endogenous fertility for a number of issues of population policy. Subject to whatever economic opportunities and constraints they face parents are assumed to maximize their own utility functions in making choices with respect to numbers of child…

Bequests and the Size of Population When Population is Endogenous
The consequences of interfamily bequests and endogenous population size for optimal and competitive population sizes and bequests are explored when individuals' utility is a function of own consumption, the number of children, and the welfare of their children. When a bequest benefits each member of a second-generation family, we show that competition leads to underprovision for future generations. Under a separability assumption, the number of c…

Some Problems in the Use of Income-contingent Loans for the Finance of Higher Education
In 1945 Friedman and Kuznets presented a radical proposal for financing professional education which Friedman 10 years later extended to higher education in general. Their proposal was, in essence, that individuals sell "share" in their future income streams in order to finance investment in themselves. This paper discusses why and how the Friedman proposal must be modified in order to take account of information costs and certain political and s…

A Long-Run Cost Function for the Local Service Airline Industry
N this study we formulate and estimate a cost function for the United States local service airline industry. Section I discusses certain characteristics of the industry and its regulation by the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) which influence the form of the cost function and the method of estimation chosen. The model is outlined in section II. The data available and the method of estimation are discussed in section III. Some tentative conclusions …
Factors Affecting Differences among Rates of Return on Investments in Individual Common Stocks
The whole of the advantages and disadvantages of the different employments of labor and stock must, in the same neighborhood, be either perfectly equal or continually tending to equality. If in the same neighborhood, there was any employment evidently either more or less advantageous than the rest, so many people would crowd into it in the one case, and so many would desert it in the other, that its advantages would soon return to the level of ot…
Railroads and American Economic Growth
In his classic paper on the significance of railroads to American economic development, Leland Jenks distinguished three principal avenues of influence: (1) The railroad was what Jenks called an “innovating idea” with important psychological impact “manifested in a wave-like profusion of new enterprise of many sorts.” (2) The railroad and railway construction and maintenance were a stimulus to the industrial and financial sectors of the economy. …
