A Research Note on the Relinquished Properties of Houses of Worship in the Greater Boston Region, 2000–2022
This research note describes the process we used to identify and build a dataset of closed houses of worship in greater Boston. Using multiple strategies to gather and cross‐check data, we compiled a list of 169 houses of worship that closed between 2000 and 2022. If the property had been formally relinquished, we were able to gather a wealth of specific details from the deeds of sale. We describe the 131 properties that sold during this time per…

Chaplaincy, traditionally a Christian concept, has evolved into the interfaith practice of spiritual care. This article describes how Jewish chaplains, the first non-Christian religious minority group in the United States to work as chaplains, adopted and adapted chaplaincy as a distinctly interfaith form of religious leadership. How does the American public interact with chaplains? Evidence from a national survey
How does the American public understand the term chaplain? What fraction interact with chaplains and in what settings? What is the content of those interactions and do care recipients find them valuable? We answer these questions with data from a nationally representative survey (N = 1096) conducted in March 2022 and interviews with a subset (N = 50) of survey recipients who interacted with chaplains. This paper analyzes the work of chaplaincy and spiritual care from the perspective of care recipients. The Persistence of Religion as a Master Status for Chaplains
The chaplain's role, as perceived by chaplains, is well-studied. The ways in which care-recipients understand the chaplain's role is not. This article analyzes interviews with 38 people who interacted with chaplains. We find that respondents understood the chaplain's job to be multidimensional.
