  • Rehearsal spaces as objects of municipal intervention in Québec

    Martin Lussier•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2026•Referencias: 14

This article examines how municipal cultural workers in Québec interpret musicians’ rehearsal spaces. It also considers how and why these spaces matter—or could matter—to their cities. Based on interviews with municipal cultural workers (such as cultural development officers, arts and culture managers, and leisure administrators), the study identifies four main ways rehearsal spaces are understood: as part of the cultural industries, as sites for…

  • Qu’est-ce qu’une intervention culturelle

    Open Access•Martin Lussier•ARTICLE•Nouvelles pratiques sociales•2024

  • Cultural Mediation and Municipal Cultural Workers in Québec

Martin Lussier•ARTICLE•The Journal of Arts Management…•2021

In Québec (Canada), a growing number of cultural workers and artists are adopting the term “cultural mediation.” The notion has gradually imposed itself on decision makers at the municipal scale and has become one of the preferred intervention approaches by local cultural civil servants. The lack of definition of cultural mediation makes it an ambiguous concept. This uncertainty about its boundaries or its meaning, makes its key promoters, the mu…

  • « Riot City »

    Martin Lussier•ARTICLE•Quebec Studies•2020

    Martin Lussier•ARTICLE•Loisir et Société / Society and…•2019•Referencias: 2

Over the last 20 years, Montreal has been the site of significant administrative, economic, and cultural transformations. In this context, the artistic and cultural community has mobilized to defend its interests and intervene with decision makers. Central to this mobilization is a desire to set up an organization representative of ‘culture’ in Montreal. Two tendencies faced off against each other: on the one hand, artists wishing to promote cult…

    Martin Lussier•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Communication•2015

During the last decade, urban planners and city councilors across the country have taken the “cultural turn.” In Montréal, this has led authorities to focus on citywide culture as a tool for enhancing creativity and for developing the economy of their municipality through the concept of “cultural poles.” But in the past few years, the attention of authorities has shifted from “poles” to “cultural quarters” (or “neighborhoods”), particularly throu…

  • ‘One for all …’

    Open Access•Martin Lussier•ARTICLE•Popular Music•2014

Award ceremonies have played a central role in popular music. One aspect of this role is their exemplarity: they place in full view what is to be valued in popular culture and, at the same time, they embody a sample of something larger than themselves, an ensemble. The Félix award, organised by ADISQ (Québec's music trade association), has played this role in Québec since 1979. However, in 1995, members of the underground scene, claiming that thi…

  • The labelling process in popular music

    Open Access•Martin Lussier•ARTICLE•MedieKultur Journal of media and…•2011•Referencias: 7

The words used to discuss genres matter. The multiplication of genres and subgenres is accompanied by a growing number of corresponding labels, which are consequently debated and disputed. Using the case of the label “musiques émergentes” (“emerging musics”), which has spread rapidly during the last decade in the cultural landscape of Montréal, Canada, this article examines one debate surrounding this label, focusing on discussions between artist…
