Barreled Meat
Food preservation, including salting and barreling meat, has played a significant role in human history; however, it remains challenging to identify cases of salting in the archaeological record. Most studies have relied on limited datasets and focus on body-part profiles observed in faunal assemblages. Known and suspected cases of barreled meat and on-site butchery, drawn from six shipwrecks and seven fur trade posts, provide a means of identify…
Minimum Animal Units and the Standardized Count Problem
Investigations at Goodson Shelter, Oklahoma
Goodson Shelter is a small sandstone rockshelter site located in Craig County, Oklahoma, situated alongside a minor tributary stream. Excavations at Goodson Shelter yielded over 2 m of largely intact deposits, which, based on radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating, along with a substantial record of temporally diagnostic projectile points, indicate the site was periodically occupied from the Archaic through the Woodland period. …
Overkill and the North American archaeological record—not guilty by association? A comment on Wolfe and Broughton (2020)
A multi-proxy study of changing environmental conditions in a Younger Dryas sequence in southwestern Manitoba, Canada — Comment on the paper by Teller et al., Quaternary Research Volume 93, 60–87

Radiocarbon simulation fails to support the temporal synchroneity requirement of the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis
Fine-scale temporal processes, such as the synchronous deposition of organic materials, can be challenging to identify using 14 C datasets. While some events, such as volcanic eruptions, leave clear evidence for synchronous deposition, synchroneity is more difficult to establish for other types of events. This has been a source of controversy regarding 14 C dates associated with a hypothesized extraterrestrial impact at the Younger Dryas Boundary…
Foetal bison long bones and mortality season estimates at the early Holocene Casper and Horner II sites, North America
Foetal animal remains present the opportunity to investigate seasonal prey mortality in archaeological contexts. Mortality seasons may be inferred by adding a gestation age, as estimated from foetal skeletal growth curves, to a known conception period. For example, given an October conception period, the remains of a 6‐month‐old foetal animal suggest deposition in April. However, three problems complicate these investigations: (1) Conception peri…
Impact scar frequency, bone density and marrow utility
This paper presents an experiment designed to evaluate the relationships between impact scar, bone density and the marrow utility of various appendicular elements. Several North American bison assemblages show positive correlations between impact scar frequencies and by‐element marrow utilities. However, this pattern may represent an equifinal relationship between bone density, nutritional utility and processing effort. In our experiment, we test…
The Atlatl to Bow Transition
The transition from the atlatl to the bow and arrow happened numerous times in prehistory, and it often accompanied changes in socio-political complexity and labor organization. Recent work relying on longitudinal scores from recreational archery and atlatl competitions suggests that changes in socio-political complexity and labor organization arose due to between-technology differences in learning rates: bows take more time to master, and thus t…
Probabilistic models of seasonal Bison exploitation based on fetal prey osteometry and reproductive phenology
Holocene cold storage practices on the eastern Snake River Plain
Skeletal Fat, Processing Intensity, and the Late Holocene Bison from Baker Cave, Southern Idaho
Although Idaho's Snake River Plain contains a trans-Holocene record of bison exploitation, archaeologists have rarely investigated carcass butchery strategies in the region. We fill this knowledge gap with a study of bison remains from Baker Cave, a late Holocene processing site on the eastern Snake River Plain. We hypothesize that these remains resulted from fat-seeking behavior in response to winter fat scarcity. We explore this hypothesis with…
Holocene bison diminution on the Snake River Plain, Idaho, USA
Researchers have established a Holocene pattern of Bison spp. diminution on the Great Plains of North America. This pattern, however, is less clear west of the Rocky Mountains. This lack of clarity stems from a relative paucity of paleontological and archaeological bison assemblages sufficiently large enough to understand local bison diminution. To begin filling this important gap in knowledge, we analyze a large bison assemblage from Baker Cave,…
