Psychological Sense of Community in Recovery Processes of Emerging and Older Adults
Across the world, governments are struggling to help people recover from substance use problems. Due to their particular risk factors, two age groups are of special interest to public health: emerging adults and older adults. Psychological sense of community (PSOC) is a key dimension in their recovery. Yet, to develop context‐sensitive and effective strategies tailored for these groups, there is a need to understand their discourses of PSOC as si…
In what ways do emerging adults with substance use problems experience their communities as influencing their personal recovery processes
Applying the multiple psychological sense of community concept (MPSOC), this study explored how emerging adults with substance use problems experience the influences of various senses of community and communities on their personal recovery processes. Semi‐structured interviews with 21 emerging adults from different urban contexts in Norway were analysed using a collaborative, seven‐step, deductive, and reflexive thematic approach. MPSOC is shown …
Multiple senses of community and recovery processes. A pilot study for a national evaluation of the experiences of persons with substance use problems receiving help and services from Norwegian munici…
AIMS: This pilot study uses a multifaceted concept of sense of community (SOC)-multiple senses of community (MPSOC)-to understand how the multiple communities of persons with substance use problems, including those with a positive, negative and neutral SOC, influence processes of substance use recovery. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 informants from different Norwegian municipalities and regions. A collaborative resear…
Making Sense of Neoliberal Subjectivity
The influence of neoliberalism on culture and subjectivity is well documented. This paper contributes to understanding of how neoliberal ideology enters into the production of subjectivity. While subject formation takes place in multiple and contradictory ways and across multiple social sites, we focus on the increasingly popular media discourse of self-development, and examine it as a technology of neoliberal subjectification. Drawing on Foucaul…
Communal Values and Individualism in Our Era of Globalization
Symbolic Boundaries and Ideology in the Norwegian Multicultural Society
Group boundaries between immigrant minority and majority members are currently undergoing considerable and complex changes in European multicultural societies due to migration. In this paper, we present a descriptive, longitudinal investigation of the usage of linguistic expressions in Norwegian media discourse that describe symbolic boundary developments between immigrant minority and majority members, and their multicultural context. Seventy‐tw…
Globalization, Neo‐Liberalism and Community Psychology
A longitudinal analysis (1984–2005) of media language in Norway is presented, demonstrating how the current globalized capitalist market ideology is now permeating this long‐established Scandinavian welfare state. This ideological shift carries powerful implications for community psychology, as traditional welfare state values of equal services based on a universalistic principle are set aside, and social and material inequalities are increasingl…
Community and Care Work in a World of Changing Ideologies
Seymour B. Sarason, one of the founders of community psychology, has stated the need for developing barometers of community changes. The authors present a methodology for identifying societal ideologies, ideological shifts and power relations as reflected by the language of public discourse. As a case study, systematic analyses of changes in the Norwegian language over the last two decades are presented. It is demonstrated how Norwegian society h…
Ideology and power
Understanding power requires analysis of the intra‐personal, interpersonal, inter‐group as well as the ideological levels. The present study demonstrates the importance of the ideological level. A longitudinal analysis (1984–2005) of media language in Norwegian public discourse demonstrates how the current globalised capitalist market ideology has increasingly permeated this long‐established Scandinavian welfare state; individualism increasing at…
The representation of social issues in public discourse and newspaper language
Gardikiotis, Martin and Hewstone (2004) investigated the representation of majority versus minority headlines in five British newspapers over a period of five years. They found majority headlines to be twice as frequent as minority headlines. However, they identified headlines with the search words ‘majority’ and ‘minority’ only in the singular form. We argue that in the public discourse the minority, but not the majority is likely to be represen…

Control and Self-confidence as Reflected in Sex-bound Patterns in Communication
Very little of the recent research on 'sex and language' has contributed much to our understanding of the actual nature of these phenomena. There has been a failure to adopt a communication perspective, and the impact of the situation has been ignored. This present study assesses the verbal communication of the four possible dyadic sex combinations (male → male; male → female; female → male; female → female) in two apparently similar, but in real…
Current Social Psychology in Norway
Introduction In addition to the obvious space restrictions, the representativity of the present review is also reduced by the following factors: (a) the prejudices of the present reviewers what they do and do not include as social psychology; and (b) information or communication barriers. Social psychology is conducted at different types of institution and at various places in Norway. The institutional go-between, however, is far from perfect. He…
Utterances in Vacuo and in Contexts
Article UTTERANCES IN VACUO AND IN CONTEXTS: AN EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL EXPLORATION OF SOME INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN WHAT IS HEARD AND WHAT IS SEEN OR IMAGINED was published on January 1, 1975 in the journal Linguistics (volume 13, issue 153)
How sex roles are represented, reflected and conserved in the Norwegian Language
As an example of the complicated 'language - social reality' relationship, the representation of the sex roles (social reality) in Norwegian (language), is analysed. The main part is devoted to an analysis of 'social realities' im plied by the words 'mann' (man) and 'kvinne' (woman). Various tech niques, varying from dictionaries via word associations to sentence comple tion tasks, were applied in this analysis. The analysis unequivocally re veal…
An experimental method for inquiring into communication
An experimental method for inquiring into the organization of an act of communication is presented, the basic idea being to create an interactional setting where one of the basic prerequisites for successful communication is not satisfied. In this particular design, the subjects interact under the false belief that they are sharing the same ‚here'. (In mean the subjects interacted more than a quarter of an hour before any doubt or suspicion about…
