Self-reported sexual coercion among in-school young people with disabilities in Ghana
There is a relatively high prevalence of sexual coercion among in- school YPWDs in Ghana. This is significantly associated with level of education, ecological zone, religion, and the type of disability. This calls for a concerted effort by policy makers such as the Ghana Education Service, Ghana Federation of the Disabled, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to intensify sex education and put in pragmatic ste…

The thematic data analysis technique was employed to present the findings. The study purposively sampled 30 teenage mother…
Influence of leisure on sexual behaviour of young people with hearing and vision loss in Ghana
Despite the potential of leisure to shape the sexual behaviour of young people with disability, there is limited knowledge on the subject. This paper explores the influence of leisure on the sexual behaviour of young people with hearing and vision loss, using data from 2127 young people aged 10–24 years from all the 16 special schools for the deaf and the blind in Ghana. The findings revealed that young people with hearing and vision loss who eng…
Sexual and reproductive health services utilisation amongst in-school young people with disabilities in Ghana
Generally, SRHS utilisation amongst the in-school YPWDs in Ghana is high but significantly associated with some predisposing, need and enabling or disabling factors. This underscores the need for policymakers to consider in-school YPWDs as a heterogeneous group in the design and implementation of SRHS programmes. The Ghana Education Service in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service should adopt appropriate pragmatic measures and targeted int…
Management of chronic non-communicable diseases in Ghana
A myriad of challenges inhibits the effective management of CNCDs. To accelerate progress towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal 3 on reducing premature mortality from CNCDs, the Ghana Health Service and management of the respective hospitals should ensure improved utility supply, adequate staff motivation, and regular in-service training. A chronic care management policy should also be implemented in addition to the review of the count…

Assessing Components of Ghana's Comprehensive Sexuality Education on the Timing of Sexual Debut Among In-School Youth
Although Ghana's comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) program has been lauded, no study has examined its association with the sexual health outcomes of Ghanaian youth. Using data collected from 2,982 in-school youth (male = 1,820 and female = 1,162) aged 15 to 17 years in three administrative regions of the country, we applied discrete-time hazard models to examine associations between components of Ghana's CSE on the timing of sexual debut am…
Determinants of Sexual Violence at Sexual Debut against in-School Adolescents in Ghana
Paid sex among men in sub-Saharan Africa
The odds of paid sex were high among men with only primary level of education, men aged 25-34, men who professed 'other' religious affiliation, men who are employed and men who are divorced. However, paid sex was low among men in the richest wealth quintile, men with tertiary level of education and men living in rural areas. This means that the decision to pay for sex is influenced by several social and demographic factors. Hence, these factors s…
Prevalence and determinants of Acute Lower Respiratory Infections among children under-five years in sub–Saharan Africa
Acute Lower Respiratory Infections (ALRIs) account for 5.8 million deaths globally and 50% of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. In this paper, we examined the prevalence and determinants of ALRIs among children under-five years in 28 sub-Saharan African countries. We used data from the most recent (2011-2016) Demographic and Health Surveys of the 28 countries. Women aged 15-49 (N = 13,495) with children under-five years participated in th…
Integration of tuberculosis and HIV services
Scaling up of integrated tuberculosis (TB)-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) services remains sub-optimal in many resource-limited countries, including Ghana, where the two conditions take a heavy toll on the financial resources of health systems as well as infected persons. Previous studies have documented several implementation challenges towards TB-HIV service integration, but views of patients on integrated service delivery have not received…
Are we our own enemies? Leisure constraints of physically and visually disabled people in Ghana
Knowledge on leisure constraints is important in advancing the discourse on leisure participation particularly amongst marginalized populations such as disabled people. Research on leisure constraints of disabled people in the contexts of developing African countries is minimal despite their different socio-cultural, economic and political environments. The concepts of both disability and leisure have socio-cultural inclinations and thus define a…
Leisure motivation of people with physical and visual disabilities in Ghana
Leisure motivation is central to the provision of leisure services especially to marginalised groups such as disabled people who may have different interests from non-disabled people. Using cross-sectional data from 536 people with physical and visual disabilities, this study assessed the leisure motivations of disabled people in Ghana. The findings suggest that the motivations of people with visual and physical disabilities were fourfold, namely…
Fruit and Vegetable Consumption by Ecological Zone and Socioeconomic Status in Ghana
The disease burden in both developed and developing countries is moving towards higher proportions of chronic diseases, and diseases such as cancers are now considered to be of public health concern. In sub-Saharan Africa, healthy behaviours such as fruit and vegetable consumption are recommended to reduce the chances of onset of chronic diseases. This paper examines the determinants of fruit and vegetable consumption in Ghana with particular emp…
Determinants of Unprotected Casual Heterosexual Sex in Ghana
Casual heterosexual sex remains a significant contributor to HIV transmissions in Ghana. The study used data from the 2008 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS) to assess the socio-demographic, economic and spatial factors influencing unprotected casual heterosexual sex among men and women. The results of the binary logistic regression models revealed that women aged 35–44 had significantly higher odds of engaging in unprotected casual heter…

Myths and misconceptions about tuberculosis transmission in Ghana
BACKGROUND: Myths and misconceptions about TB can serve as a barrier to efforts at reducing stigmatisation of people infected and affected by the disease. Understanding such drivers of myths and misconceptions is important for improving information, education and communication (IEC) efforts of national control and preventive interventions. This study therefore assesses the influence of interaction of spatial, socioeconomic and demographic charact…
