  • Tracing Income Inequality Trends in Germany from 2010 to 2022

Open Access•Philippe Valet, Patricia Böger et al.•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2025•Referencias: 1

This data visualization illustrates trends in income inequality within and across different contexts in Germany from 2010 to 2022. The authors examine four key contexts in which income inequalities predominantly arise: (1) the national level, (2) the industry level, (3) the occupational level, and (4) the firm level. Using large-scale official data on employee incomes in Germany, the authors compute contextual income inequalities and assess the i…

  • Perceptions of Pay Satisfaction and Pay Justice

    Open Access•Philippe Valet•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 20

Individual perceptions of pay satisfaction and pay justice are closely related social indicators. Notwithstanding their apparent resemblance, there are essential theoretical differences between those two concepts. Yet, we know little if people merely consider pay satisfaction and pay justice as two sides of the same coin. This paper theorizes two situations in which people’s perceptions of pay satisfaction and pay justice should differ in meaning…

  • Categorical Distinctions and Claims-Making

    Open Access•Carl Sauer, Philippe Valet et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2021•Citada por: 37•Referencias: 79

In this article, we examine wage negotiations as a specific instance of claims-making, predicting that the capacity to make a claim is first a function of the position, rather than the person, and that lower-status actors-women, migrants, fixed-term, part-time, and unskilled workers-are all more likely to be in positions where negotiation is not possible. At the same time, subordinate-status actors may be less likely to make claims even where neg…

  • Social Structure and the Paradox of the Contented Female Worker

    Open Access•Philippe Valet, Peter Valet•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2018•Citada por: 23•Referencias: 55

This article provides a structural explanation for the paradox of the contented female worker. Although they are generally aware that they earn less than men, women usually perceive their wages as more just. This article argues that men and women do not differ in how they perceive their wages, yet the gendered segregation of the labor market will constrain the availability of preferred same-gender referent standards in some occupations. Random- a…

  • Rules, Relations, and Work

    J Roscigno, Vincent J Roscigno et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•2018•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 88

Classic theory is ambiguous regarding what is most meaningful for workers and workplaces. Are bureaucratic rules most consequential by providing predictability, as suggested by Weber, or problematic, owing to assaults on autonomy? And what of proximate social relations, seen as fundamental in ethnographic, resistance, and justice accounts? This article’s analyses, which draw on a unique sample of approximately 2,500 German workers across heteroge…

  • Cognitive deficit in hippocampal-dependent tasks in Werner syndrome mouse model

Open Access•Mercedes Pizarro Santos, Khaoula Rekik et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioural Brain Research•2017

Mammalian aging is often characterized by metabolic disturbances, cognitive declines and DNA repairs deficiency, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are still not well understood. Alterations in DNA repair can significantly exacerbate aging. Mammalian neuronal cells which accumulate unrepaired DNA damage over time could potentially lead to brain functions disorders. Focusing on the ATP-dependent RecQ-type DNA helicase, an enzyme involved in r…

  • Relative Standards and Distributive Justice

    Open Access•Simone M Schneider, Simone Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•2017•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 23

Theories of distributive justice claim perceptions of justice have a comparative basis. They suggest the degree to which individuals perceive their earnings as just or unjust depends on the degree to which their earnings differ from those of similar others. Drawing on recent research on social comparisons, we argue social comparison orientations—the general tendency of individuals to compare themselves with others—moderate the link between relati…

  • Unfair Pay and Health

Reinhard Schunck, Carl Sauer et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2015•Citada por: 20•Referencias: 38

While there is ample evidence that income inequalities influence individuals’ health status, the mechanisms behind this income inequality–health correlation are only partially understood. This study shows that inequalities evaluated on the basis of individual perceptions of injustice are a driving force behind this connection. Two main questions are addressed: Does perceiving one’s earnings as unfair affect physical health? Do such perceptions co…
