Monopoly Power upon the World of Work
International audience
Power, Knowledge and Technology in a Finite World
This introduction to our special issue on “Intellectual Monopoly and the Reconfiguration of Corporate Power” provides an overview of the contributions and situates them within a broader analysis of the current global capitalist juncture. It focuses on the role of knowledge amid the ecological crisis and how intellectual monopolisation is detrimental not only to the future but also to the present of our societies. The papers in this issue examine …
Digital technologies, labor market flows and training
New technologies can shape the production process by affecting the way in which inputs are embedded in the organization, their quality, and their use. Using an original employer-employee dataset that merges firm-level data on digital technology adoption and other characteristics of production with employee-level data on worker entry and exit rates from the administrative archive of the Italian Ministry of Labor, this paper explores the effects of…
Asymmetric effects of macro policies on women’s and men’s incomes. An empirical investigation of the eurozone crisis in a gender perspective
We study how macro policies affected women’s and men’s incomes during the financial crisis in Europe. We consider the monetary stance, proxied by benchmark interest rates, and the fiscal stance, measured by the variation in public expenditures and public revenues, and investigate how they are associated to women’s and men’s labor and capital incomes, using microdata for 27 European countries between 2008 and 2016. We individualize household-level…
Productivity slowdown across European regions
In recent decades, Europe has experienced a significant slowdown in productivity, accompanied by rising regional inequalities. At the same time, the fragmentation of work and the rise of non-standard forms of employment have deeply reshaped labour markets. Through the analysis of an extensive database comprising data on regional labour markets and productivity trends, we investigate the relationship between non-standard work and labour productivi…
The diffusion of digital skills across EU regions
The digital transformation is an important driver of long-run productivity growth and, as such, it has the potential to promote a more inclusive and sustainable growth. However, digital capabilities, crucial to develop and govern new digital technologies, are unevenly distributed across European regions, increasing the risk of divergence and polarisation. By taking advantage of a set of original indicators capturing the level of digital skills in…
The higher educated, the lower paid
This paper explores the temporary-permanent wage gap experienced by Italian graduate workers. To evaluate the wage gap along the entire wage distribution and account for heterogeneous effects of temporary employment, we apply the Recentered Influence Function (RIF) regression approach. The results suggest that the monthly net wage earned by Italian highly educated workers having a temporary contract is lower than that of their ‘permanent’ counter…
Firm strategies and distributional dynamics
Using an original database on medium and large Italian firms built by merging the Rilevazione Imprese e Lavoro run by INAPP in 2010 and 2015 with the AIDA archive by Bureau Van Dijk, we show that the trend of the labour share differs along the labour share distribution. We carry out Unconditional Quantile Regression decompositions to explore the main drivers behind this heterogeneity. Thus, we contribute to the literature on the dynamics of the l…
Heterogeneity matters
This study analyses the relationship between flexible employment, productivity and wages, along their distributions. We use an original firm-level dataset, which combines information on workplace characteristics from Rilevazione su Imprese e Lavoro (RIL) with the Analisi Informatizzata delle Aziende Italiane (AIDA) balance sheet information for the universe of Italian non-agriculture/financial corporations. We employ different quantile regression…
