Study of technology, provenance, and cross-regional cultural exchange of Warring States period silver artifacts from the Laolongtou cemetery, Yanyuan County, Sichuan Province, Southwest China
Mirrors of the deep
The scientific investigation of handled bronze mirrors recovered from the Nanhai No. I shipwreck offers new insights into their production techniques, alloy compositions, and cultural significance during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279 AD). They include 6 six-lobed mirrors, 4 nearly circular mirrors, and 14 lozenge-shaped mirrors each adorned with a single dragon motif. Using micro X-ray fluorescence (μXRF) and MC-ICP-MS, we analyzed the all…

Minting practices and economic transitions in mid-western Han China
Coins serve as direct indicators of socio-economic activities, embodying valuable historical information. Although previous studies have examined Wuzhu coins from the Western Han Dynasty, detailed investigations into the Wuzhu coins produced by the three Shanglin offices上林三官 (SLSG) remain limited, particularly concerning variations across the reigns from Emperor Wudi to Xuandi (113–49 BCE), a period marked by significant economic transformation. …

This study presents the first systematic provenance analysis of raw materials used in ancient Chinese gold artifacts, focusing on 16 gold foil fragments excavated from archaeological sites in Xinjiang, China, dating to the 6th–3rd centuries BCE. Most samples are associated with the Pazyryk culture, with one attributed to the Suodunbulake culture. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrome…
Technological social enterprises as instruments for integrated public problem-solving - a multiple case study in China
Cross‐Border Luxuries
This groundbreaking study delves into the secrets of ancient amber through a meticulous examination of two amber artifacts dating back to the Eastern Han Dynasty, unearthed in Beijing. Utilizing a suite of sophisticated analytical methodologies, including Fourier‐transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy, near‐infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and computed tomography (CT) scanning, the research elucidates th…
Study on the glazed tiles of the Wenjiangduo site, Tibet, China (7th–9th centuries CE)
The Central Plains of China have a long history of using glazed tiles on high‐level architectural structures. This architectural practice also had a profound impact on ancient Tibet. This study selected glazed tiles belonging to the Tubo period (7th–9th centuries CE), unearthed from the Wenjiangduo site, Lhasa city, Tibet Autonomous Region, China. A series of scientific analyses are presented, including X‐ray fluorescence, optical microscopy, sca…

From mines to tombs
State intervention in post-Qin bronze production in Sichuan
Bronze mou vessels appear in Shu tombs in south-west China during the Eastern Zhou period (c. 771-256 BC). Examination of these vessels reveals major changes in the supply of metal and alloying technology in the Shu State, throwing new light on the social impact of the Qin conquest and later unification of China

Concentration‐number (C‐N) fractal models reveal the distribution pattern of the elements in ancient nephrite measured by portable X‐ray fluorescence
Changes in the composition of various chemical elements in ancient nephrite artifacts due to prolonged burial are critical factors that should not be underestimated. However, the increasingly stringent heritage management has made many techniques impractical. Consequently, portable X‐ray fluorescence (pXRF) has become an indispensable nondestructive field analysis method. This paper aims to make use of the pXRF dataset to distinguish which elemen…

Surprising combinations of bronze vessels with multiple cultural elements have been unearthed in Shu tombs in southwestern China, indicating a significant connection with the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. However, there is currently no comprehensive evidence for the provenance of these foreign style vessels, and little emphasis has been given to the diachronic changes in the interaction between Shu culture and its surroundings. T…

Archaeometallurgical research on the manufacture of lead mingqi from Nanyang in Chu state during the Warring States period
The mingqi is the material manifestation of ancient Chinese burial rituals. As opposed to the prevalent bronze wares in the living world, lead mingqi was one of the major wares for the netherworld. But research on lead mingqi has been quite sparse up to the present. In this paper, 11 Warring States period lead mingqi from three Chu sites in Nanyang are taken as examples and analysed by metallurgical observations, scanning electron microscopy with…
Accurate identification of the pastry contained in a ceramic pot excavated from Jurou Li's grave from the Jin dynasty (1115–1234 ce ) in Xi'an, Shaanxi, China
In order to identify accurately the circular object contained in the ceramic pot excavated from Jurou Li's grave of the Jin dynasty (1115–1234 ce ) in Xi'an, Shaanxi, China, mass spectrometry was applied to determine the amino acid sequences of the residual proteins extracted from the sample, after preliminary starch grain analysis. The sequences were searched against a standard protein sequence database. The proteins extracted were identified as…

Study on Cizhou‐Style Inlaid Porcelain, the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1,127 AD), China
The production of inlaid porcelain once prevailed in the Northern Song (960–1,127 AD) and Jin Dynasties (1,125–1,234 AD) across the north of China. During that time, the influence of the Cizhou kiln was considerable. However, we know little about the inlaying techniques used in ancient Chinese porcelain. In order to address this gap in knowledge, a total of seven pieces of inlaid porcelain sherds with the Cizhou style of the Northern Song Dynasty…
