  • A Civil War Surgeon’s Pit at Manassas National Battlefield Park, Virginia

    Open Access•Karin S Bruwelheide, Douglas W Owsley et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Archaeology•2023•Referencias: 9

Human bone fragments were discovered during archaeological monitoring of earth moving on Manassas National Battlefield Park in Virginia. Later mitigation recovered bones in situ—two skeletons and seven amputated limbs. Interdisciplinary research affords an unusually detailed level of interpretation, including identification of the remains as Union soldiers wounded during the Battle of Second Manassas (28–30 August 1862). The reconstructed narrati…

  • Human ecological impacts on islands

    Open Access•María Fernanda Martínez‐polanco, María Fernanda Martínez-Polanco et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2022•Referencias: 25

The present study's primary goal is to apply analyses of stable isotopes and tooth micro- and mesowear to the question of dietary change among a mid-Holocene population of small brocket deer (Cervidae: Mazama) in response to anthropogenic alteration of the natural insular vegetation for approximately 450 calendar years (6060-5620 cal yr BP). The brocket deer remains were found in shell-bearing middens on Pedro González in the Pearl Island archipe…

OBJECTIVES: Stable isotope values for historic period human remains from Elmina, Ghana, are compared to isotope data from 18th- and 19th-century North American sites as a test case for examining African origins and identifying first generation Africans in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Stable carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen isotope values were measured in skeletal remains. Values from the cosmopolitan port city …

Throughout Mesoamerica, corporal animal forms (a term encompassing living animals, animal-derived by-products and artifacts made from animal bodies) have long played essential roles in state-level ritualized activities. This paper focuses on three zooarchaeological assemblages from the Classic Period Maya kingdom of Copan, Honduras (ad426–822), to describe how corporal animal forms were implemented to mediate power, express social identities and …

  • Human and Canid Dietary Relationships

    Open Access•Catherine F West, C A M France et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2015

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes are used to address the dietary relationship between humans and two canid species at the Uyak site (KOD-145) on Kodiak Island, Alaska: dog (Canis familiaris) and red fox (Vulpes vulpes). We assess the relative contribution of marine and terrestrial protein to each species’ diet as a measure of their dietary relationship to people, using zooarchaeological data, food web data, and ethnohistoric observations to in…

  • The effects of Paraloid B ‐72 and Butvar B ‐98 treatment and organic solvent removal on δ 13 C , δ 15 N , and δ 18 O values of collagen and hydroxyapatite in a modern bone

Stable isotopes in bones are a powerful tool for diet, provenance, climate, and physiological reconstructions, but necessarily require well‐preserved specimens unaltered by postmortem diagenesis or conservation practices. This study examines the effects of Paraloid B‐72 and Butvar B‐98, two common consolidants used in field and museum conservation, on δ 13 C, δ 15 N, and δ 18 O values from bone collagen and hydroxyapatite. The effects of solvent …

Spacing between stable isotope values in bones and teeth is a valuable tool for examining dietary influences and diagenesis. This study examines carbon and oxygen isotope values from collagen and hydroxyapatite (structural carbonate and phosphate) in archaeological human bones and teeth to derive species-specific correlation equations and isotope spacing values. The δ13Ccollagen and δ13Cstructural carbonate in bone and dentin collagen show a stro…
