The task has now been made much easier by a long-term programme of conservation alongside an ongoing cataloguing project which is making detailed descriptions available for the first time. This case study uses the records of the court to provide a vivid account of the life of the Rest…

In this paper I would like to explore theories of disease and practices of healing in late medieval and early modern Europe, and to focus on two diseases, leprosy and plague. Much of the discussion will be based on Italian evidence since in this period, and especially in the sixteenth century, Italy was in the forefront of European medicine. Physicians were more numerous in Italy than in most European countries, and available not only in cities, …

These are apocalyptic times, Doctor, says Strelnikov in Doctor Zhivago, and same might be said today. Andrew Hacker has said that we stand at the end of American era,1 but more sobering thought is that we stand at end of era, an era stretching back not just two hundred but five hundred years. The of to which Robert Hunter refers2 is storming of mind: not mind of modernism, mind. Something like a general effort to break out of limits of modern thi…

  • The Postmodernity of Heidegger

    Richard E Palmer•ARTICLE•boundary 2•1976

Why discuss postmodernity of Heidegger? There is good reason: for many American readers Heidegger appears as regressive, as a mystic or a crank. His interpretations of poetic texts are often taken as ideosyncratic exercises which would merit no attention at all were they not by a man whose major accomplishments were philosophy. His imitators and literary disciples do not come off as well; their efforts are viewed by establishmentarians as bypassi…
