Diverging and merging regimes of historicity along the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea
Using Hartog’s regimes of historicity as a heuristic device, I analyze three case studies from the Nyaura (West Iatmul) of the middle Sepik to show how different ways of being-in-time interact with and impact on each other. I discuss the Supreme Sukundimi Declaration, published as part of a campaign against the Frieda River Copper-Gold Project, in relation to the cosmo-ontological politics of individual and collective actors in a mining encounter in Papua New Guinea. I analyse the mobilisation of the Sepik River as a sacred being and a political actor from a perspective informed by findings from long-term fieldwork with Nyaura communities. A Sepik myth tells of a time in which women were in charge of powerful spirits before jealous men reversed the gender roles by force. Today, the men of Timbunmeli (Nyaura, West Iatmul) have lost control over spirits who have started to act through female bodies. The Thomas Souls Ministry – Onto‐praxis, Dividualism, and Charismatic Catholicism at Lake Chambri, Papua New Guinea
The Thomas Souls Ministry is a prayer group founded by Catholics from the middle Sepik. It is led by a spirit of the dead called Thomas who takes possession of a Nyaura (West Iatmul) woman to preach, prophesy, counsel, and heal. While a prominent debate within the Anthropology of Christianity argues for radical change and rupture with the pre‐Christian self and society, I suggest that continuity within change is found in the way my interlocutors …

This article explores Nyaura (West Iatmul) ontology and cosmology in the context of religious change.
