  • A World of Populations

John P Dimoia, Maria Dörnemann et al.•BOOK•A World of Populations•2022

Demographic study and the idea of a “population” was developed and modified over the course of the twentieth century, mirroring the political, social, and cultural situations and aspirations of different societies. This growing field adapted itself to specific policy concerns and was therefore never apolitical, despite the protestations of practitioners that demography was “natural.” Demographics were transformed into public policies that shaped …

  • Counting Americans

    Paul Schor•BOOK•Counting Americans•2017

By telling how the US census classified and divided Americans by race and origin from the founding of the United States to World War II, this book shows how public statistics have been used to create an unequal representation of the nation. From the beginning, the census was a political undertaking, torn between the conflicting demands of the state, political actors, social scientists, businesses, and interest groups. Through the extensive archiv…

  • The Disappearance of the “Mulatto” as the End of Inquiry into the Composition of the Black Population of the United States

    Paul Schor•BOOK•Counting Americans•2017

This chapter discusses changes in the categorization of blacks and mulattoes at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1900, for the first time since blacks had been individually enumerated, the entire black population was combined into a single category, “Black”. This included all persons who were “negro or of negro descent.” The mulatto category then reappeared in 1910, but in the new context of a difference in ability rather than a biologi…

  • New Asian Races, New Mixtures, and the “Mexican” Race

    Paul Schor•BOOK•Counting Americans•2017

This chapter discusses changes in racial categorization in the early twentieth century with respect to the US census. Whenever there was a question of the racial classification of new populations, whether in the continental United States or in the territories acquired since 1867, the census always relied on the principles and techniques developed since 1850 to distinguish blacks from whites. Chief among these was the principle of hypodescent, in …

  • The Chinese and Japanese in the Census

    Paul Schor•BOOK•Counting Americans•2017

This chapter discusses the integration of Chinese and Japanese into the US census. The American census added a new race it termed “Chinese” to its questionnaires beginning in 1870 and “Japanese” in 1890. The remarkable thing is that what was a nationality immediately became a race as well. Since 1850, the place of birth of all inhabitants had been recorded, whether or not they were immigrants, and in the case of non-European immigrants, two categ…

  • Color and Status of Slaves

    Paul Schor•BOOK•Counting Americans•2017

This chapter discusses how the definition of race varied over time and place and remained uncertain in cases judged by the courts in the antebellum era. In the 1850s, a claim of whiteness was an argument that could be made in court to obtain liberty, since a white person could not be a slave. Legal status did not rest on the same forms of proof as the census, but the two perspectives overlapped. Comparing the procedures for determining the legal …

  • Conclusion

    Paul Schor•BOOK•Counting Americans•2017

This concluding chapter summarizes key themes and presents some final thoughts. It argues that while this study takes up the last half-century only marginally, it should be read as an implicit comparison with the present, since reflection on racial and ethnic categories is so much a historical focus of today. In showing that a certain number of attributes of modernity can be traced back through archival evidence, this study tried at once to histo…

He shows how the circulation of these concepts is a complex thi…

    Open Access•Paul Schor•ARTICLE•Civilisations•2006

Open Access•Paul Schor•ARTICLE•International Social Science…•2005•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 5

The US census is characterised, among other features, by the importance it gives, to this day, to race. There is an ongoing debate on the use of racial categories to underpin affirmative action policies, but their presence in the census is little discussed. This tends either to mask the functions of racial and ethnic categories in the pre-civil rights era or to lead to consideration of such categories as a mere residue of historical discriminatio…

  • Statistiques de la population et politique des catégories aux États-Unis au xixe siècle. Théories raciales et questions de population dans le recensement américain

    Paul Schor•ARTICLE•Annales de Démographie Historique•2003

The American census, taken every ten years since 1790, was created by the Constitution to apportion the seats of Representatives in proportion of the population of the States. Therefore, Congress maintained a firm control on the questions asked, and the political dimension of the census was important. Looking at three cases, I show how the census was located at the intersection of different levels of action, political, scientific and technical; t…

Mais les bolcheviks n’existaient pas en dehors de la société russe; c’est d’elle qu’ils émergèrent. • Compter et classer par race [Hawaii, les Îles Vierges et le recensement américain, 1900-1940]

    Paul Schor•ARTICLE•Histoire & Mesure•1998
