Communities of Care and Muslims in Portugal
A significant body of anthropological literature discusses the ethical and spiritual dimensions of charity practised by Muslims. This has brought volunteering and giving into consideration in recent research on the anthropology of Islam, highlighting the spiritual and material rewards for those who give to charity. This article is based on one year of ethnographic fieldwork in a charitable organisation in Portugal called Noor Fatima, founded by a…
Facets of charity
This article examines the networks of charity developed by Muslims to discuss community-making in Portugal. Giving allows donors to create affective and moral spaces of communal life with recipients of aid that move beyond the ethical and pious dimensions of charity. By exploring past and present postcolonial links between two Muslim groups in Portugal, I argue that acts of charity allow us to explore the material conditions of Muslim groups in E…

Escolher, cuidar e proteger
Changing Family Strategies in Contemporary Morocco Women's Stories, Persistent Ideologies and Matrimonial Strategies
This article analyses changing family structures in Morocco by examining four households within one family’s residential compound. Despite its location in a rural setting, this compound is not the main site of economic production for these domestic units, meaning that other principles operate in the distribution and use of land. To analyse households within this property allows us to capture how marriage strategies and women’s position inside the…
