Human-centered design of an adapted differentiated service delivery model for pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV in Kenya
Differentiated service delivery (DSD) models for pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV (WLH) are lacking despite guidelines recommending DSD for this population. We used human-centered design (HCD) to develop a DSD model for pregnant and postpartum WLH at the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) in Kenya. We conducted co-creation workshops with 11 postpartum women, 9 male partners and 9 providers from three AMPATH-affili…

Influencing Canadian young adults to receive additional Covid-19 vaccination shots
Younger adults, aged 18–39 years, exhibit low COVID-19 additional vaccine (i.e., vaccination beyond the original 2-dose series) uptake recommended in Canada. No study has examined how altruistic and individualistic messaging can influence COVID-19 additional dose intentions. The present study aimed to estimate the efficacy of altruism and individualism-based videos on vaccine intentions and to explore the multivariable associations between vaccin…
HPV Vaccine Awareness, Past Behaviors, and Future Intentions Among a Diverse Sample of Fathers Aged 27 to 45 Years
Men aged 27 to 45 are eligible for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination as of 2019, yet relatively little is known about whether they have received or intend to receive it. We conducted a cross-sectional, online survey among fathers aged 27 to 45 between March and April 2022, to assess associations between HPV vaccination awareness, behaviors, intentions, and psychosocial constructs from the Health Belief Model. We examined the characteristics …
HPV vaccine behaviors and intentions among a diverse sample of women aged 27-45 years
Our findings suggest that many women in this age group are interested in HPV vaccination. While the recommendation is for SCDM rather than routine vaccination for all women in this age group, efforts to promote informed decision-making among mid-adult women may include educating women about the rigorous vaccine testing and approval process, their risk factors for HPV infection, and encouraging them to engage in SCDM with their medical providers. …
Clinician Perspectives on Implementing HPV Vaccination Guidelines into Practice
In the United States, HPV vaccination is available for unvaccinated 27 to 45 year olds based on a shared clinical decision with a health care provider. Since the implementation of the guideline, little has been known about provider perceptions of this recommendation. The purpose of this study was to elucidate health care provider perspectives on HPV vaccination for 27 to 45 year olds in the United States. Semi-structured interviews were conducted…
County-Level Factors Associated With Influenza and Covid-19 Vaccination in Indiana, 2020‒2022
Objectives. To assess COVID-19 and influenza vaccination rates across Indiana’s 92 counties and identify county-level factors associated with vaccination. Methods. We analyzed county-level data on adult COVID-19 vaccination from the Indiana vaccine registry and 2021 adult influenza vaccination from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We used multiple linear regression (MLR) to determine county-level predictors of vaccinations. Results…

Returning to Normal in an Abnormal Environment
This study used uncertainty management theory to assess mothers’ COVID-19-related uncertainty sources and management strategies during the Delta variant outbreak as the fall 2021 school year approached. Twenty-five mothers living in Indiana were interviewed between July-August 2021. Data indicated four uncertainty sources: COVID-19 illness risk, children’s psychological health, reintegration, and COVID-19 vaccine/prevention rights. COVID-19 illne…
Mothers’ Sources and Strategies for Managing Covid-19 Uncertainties during the Early Pandemic Months
The COVID-19 pandemic presents unprecedented challenges and uncertainties for families. Guided by uncertainty management theory, this study qualitatively explored mothers' sources of COVID-related uncertainties for their older children and the strategies used to manage their uncertainties. Twenty-five mothers in the U.S. Midwest were interviewed by telephone between March-May 2020 during the early pandemic months. Data indicated four sources of u…
Perceived social support and compliance with stay-at-home orders during the Covid-19 outbreak
Public health messaging may need to emphasize the role that friends and families can play in helping to protect those in their friendship/family groups by promoting compliance with social distancing. Further in-depth studies are recommended to evaluate how this kind of messaging can most effectively encourage people to engage in social distancing practices
The role of the media on maternal confidence in provider HPV recommendation
Providers' approach to HPV vaccination recommendation must consider concerns reported in the media with delivery techniques modified to adjust to maternal fears absorbed from adverse media information
A National Survey Assessing Sars-CoV-2 Vaccination Intentions
With SARS-CoV-2 vaccines under development, research is needed to assess intention to vaccinate. We conducted a survey ( N = 3,159) with U.S. adults in May 2020 assessing SARS-CoV-2 vaccine intentions, intentions with a provider recommendation, and sociodemographic and psychosocial variables. Participants had high SARS-CoV-2 vaccine intentions ( M = 5.23/7-point scale), which increased significantly with a provider recommendation ( M = 5.47). Hie…
Behavior and health beliefs as predictors of HIV testing among women
Much of the research examining predictors of HIV testing has used retrospective self-report to assess HIV testing. FINDINGS: therefore, may be subject to recall bias and to difficulties determining the direction of associations. In this prospective study, we administered surveys to women in community clinics to identify predictors of subsequent observed HIV testing, overcoming these limitations. Eighty-three percent were tested. In the adjusted m…

This open-label study examined adherence to PrEP and assessed sexual behavior among a diverse sample of YMSM in 12 US cities. METHODS: Eligible participants were 18- to 22-year-old HIV-uninfected MSM who reported HIV transmission risk behavior in the previous 6 months. Participants were provided daily tenofov…
‘Is it like one of those infectious kind of things?’ The importance of educating young people about HPV and HPV vaccination at school
The National Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Program in Australia commenced in 2007 for girls and in 2013 for boys, using the quadrivalent HPV [4vHPV] vaccine. In Australia, students are primarily vaccinated en masse, on school grounds, after parental/ guardian consent is obtained. Students most often receive little, or no, education at school about HPV or HPV vaccination prior to immunisation. There is also some uncertainty about where yo…

Ethics and Childhood Vaccination Policy in the United States
Childhood immunization involves a balance between parents’ autonomy in deciding whether to immunize their children and the benefits to public health from mandating vaccines. Ethical concerns about pediatric vaccination span several public health domains, including those of policymakers, clinicians, and other professionals. In light of ongoing developments and debates, we discuss several key ethical issues concerning childhood immunization in the …

The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support
Psychometric Properties of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support in Urban Adolescents
The psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were investigated in 222 urban, largely African‐American adolescents (68%). High internal consistency was demonstrated, and factor analysis confirmed the three subscale structures of the MSPSS: family, friends, and significant other. Correlations with a family caring scale supported the discriminant validity of the Family subscale. These results confirm …
Partner‐specific relationship characteristics and condom use among young people with sexually transmitted diseases
This study describes associations of partner‐specific relationship characteristics with consistent condom use among 297 young people (ages 13–24) with sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Relationship‐specific variables were relationship quality, reasons for sex, relationship duration, duration of sexual relationship, coital frequency, “established” versus “new” sexual partner, cohabitation, children, sexual coercion, and drug or alcohol use asso…

Young Women's Use of a Vaginal Microbicide Surrogate
Currently in clinical trials, microbicides have historically been promoted as a woman-controlled (although more recently woman initiated) method of sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention. The contradicition that exists in this rationale is that women's bodies, specifically the genitals, have been constructed as a negotiated space within sexual interactions. This study qualitatively explored the factors influencing 40 young women's use of…
Reports of childhood sexual abuse by adolescents and young adults
The consistency of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) reporting was explored in this study. Two-hundred seventeen adolescents and young adults (ages 14-24) enrolled in urban health care clinics completed self-report questionnaires assessing CSA and other problem behaviors at enrollment and at 7 months. Results indicated that the stability of CSA self-report at two time points was poor (58% consistent nonreporters of CSA, 20% consistent reporters, 22% i…

What, Me Worry
Little is known about the bases of parental worry about adolescents' risk for acquiring a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Parents ( N = 247) of adolescents 12-17 years endorsed reasons that explained their worry or nonworry. Parents' past experience of an STI, perception of the child's sexual activity, and racial self-identification were predictors of worry. Cluster analyses identified five groups of worriers and four groups of nonworriers.…

Psychometric Characteristics of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support
The initial study describing the development of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) indicated that it was a psychometrically sound instrument (Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet, & Farley, 1988). The current study attempted to extend the initial findings by demonstrating the internal reliability, factorial validity, and subscale validity of the MSPSS using three different subject groups: (a) 265 pregnant women, (b) 74 adolescents liv…

Doubting the Experts
Many homeless and runaway adolescents may be at a high risk for HIV infection. Ideas about the severity of AIDS, possible modes of transmission, and the integrity of those who provide information about HIV/AIDS come into play as youths make safer sex decisions. Information on youths' ideas about these issues can be used to improve the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS education programs that target them. We interviewed 98 adolescents at two youth shelter…
