Trajectory-Driven Road Network Extraction via Coupled Multi-Level Grid Semantics
Road network extraction and updating are crucial for urban development, map updating, and mobility applications. Existing trajectory-based methods often underutilize grid-level semantic information and neighborhood context, thereby limiting their robustness to noisy, heterogeneous, and cross-city trajectory conditions. This study proposes a supervised framework for trajectory-driven road network extraction by coupling intra-grid movement semantic…
Postfeminism with Chinese characteristics
This article critically examines Shen Yifei as a paradigmatic case of “postfeminism with Chinese characteristics.” Drawing on discourse analysis of her digital self-representation, it situates Shen’s visibility at the intersections of China’s knowledge economy, platform capitalism, and state gender governance. As an associate professor of sociology and self-branded “knowledge-based love mentor,” Shen leverages institutional prestige to circulate …
Pilot study on benzene exposure risks in healthcare workers
Introduction Healthcare professions involve frequent exposure to harmful chemicals such as benzene, particularly in environments with suboptimal hygiene, posing significant occupational health risks. This pilot study aimed to assess benzene exposure among healthcare workers in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Methods Blood samples were collected from 51 healthcare workers, including laboratory technologists, paramedics, nurses, and housekeeping staff, at si…
Co-calibration of cognitive performance in the National Health and Aging Trends Study with the Health and Retirement Study's Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol
NHATS and HRS-HCAP both provide reliable cognitive function measures and dementia prevalence estimates for older Americans. Co-calibrated scores based on each study's cognitive test battery provide a valid and feasible approach for comparative US research. Better aligned algorithmic approaches across studies could strengthen opportunities for comparative studies of disparities in the US context using the co-calibration approach

Instead of centering on the relatively elite cultural spaces that have shaped much of the existing scholarship on Chinese queer culture, such as independent cinema, film festivals, and performing arts, this study turns to digital culture as a site where every day queer expression and community building unfolds. Using Huaxiaodiao, a popular nonbinary/gay vlogger with a substantial following on the Chinese video platform Bilibili, as a case study, …
Wounded hearts
This research investigates the affective making of misogynistic male victimhood in China, focusing on how the “familial sexual contract” shapes contemporary gender relations. By analyzing three widely debated social media events that sparked intense discussions between 2 May and 10 May 2024, this study explores how male netizens perceive themselves as victims, labeling women as “Lao-nv” (捞女), or gold-diggers, who exploit financialized relationshi…
Indigenizing feminist rage
This study explores the everyday digital practices of Jinü (Chinese radical feminists) through the lens of the cultural politics of emotion. Based on three years of digital ethnography and interviews, the research identifies “rage” as a critical “emotional rule” among Jinü . This collective rage, shaped by affective discursive practices and rooted in various sub-emotions experienced by members, manifests in three forms: rage directed at men, othe…
Cumulative (dis)advantages in cognitive health
These results support the cumulative (dis)advantages framework and demonstrate that institutional or policy discrimination such as through hukou policies plays a critical role in cognitive disparities among older adults. Taken together, the results suggest that reforms to provide greater resources to rural areas and access to urban hukou could be an important tool to improve cognitive health among rural and migrant populations, and ultimately red…

ObjectivesTo examine lifetime experiences of employment discrimination and their association with Black older adults' employment status and well-being.MethodsWe use data from the Health and Retirement Study's leave-behind questionnaire to characterize lifetime experiences of being unfairly fired, not hired, or not promoted among Black older adults ( N = 2331) and test associations with labor force status at age 62, job satisfaction among those wo…
Educational Attainment and Later-Life Cognitive Function in High- and Middle-Income Countries
The relationship between education and later-life cognitive function across social and geographic contexts underscores the crucial role of education to promote cognitive health and reduce dementia risk. Continual improvement of educational attainment in low- and middle-income settings may yield a significant pay-off in later-life cognitive health
Sociodemographic patterns in biomarkers of aging in the Add Health cohort
Biomarkers in population health research serve as indicators of incremental physiological deterioration and contribute to our understanding of mechanisms through which social disparities in health unfold over time. Yet, few population-based studies incorporate biomarkers of aging in early midlife, when disease risks may emerge and progress across the life course. We describe the distributions of several biomarkers of inflammation and neurodegener…

Time Path of Weight Status Before and After Incident Dementia
Objectives: Identifying whether obesity is a risk factor for dementia is complicated by the possibility of weight change as dementia evolves. This article investigates an extended time path of body mass index (BMI) before and after incident dementia in a nationally representative sample. Methods: Using the Health and Retirement Study (2000-2016), we examine (1) the longitudinal relationship between BMI and incident dementia and (2) heterogeneity …
Trends in Dementia Prevalence, Incidence, and Mortality in the United States (2000–2016)
Objectives: The prevalence of dementia has declined in the United States; how this parallels to changes in incidence and mortality, and how improvements in educational attainment may have influences these trends, is not known. Methods: Using the Health and Retirement Study (2000-2016), we estimated logistic regression models to examine trends in dementia prevalence and incidence, and mortality for those with and without dementia. Results: The rel…
Links Between Mortality and Socioeconomic Characteristics, Disease Burden, and Biological and Physical Functioning in the Aging Chinese Population
The results show that the objectively measured indicators of physical functioning and biomarkers are independent and strong predictors of mortality risk after accounting for several additional self-reported health measures, confirming the value of incorporating biological and performance measurements in population health surveys to help understand health changes and aging processes that lead to mortality. This study also highlights the importance…
The Importance of Improving Educational Attainment for Dementia Prevalence Trends From 2000 to 2014, Among Older Non-Hispanic Black and White Americans
This study shows the importance of improvement in educational attainment in the early part of the twentieth century to understand the downward trend in dementia prevalence in the United States from 2000 to 2014
Ascertaining cause of mortality among middle-aged and older persons using computer-coded and expert review verbal autopsies in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study
BACKGROUND: Verbal autopsy is designed to ascertain causes of death that are not registered or certified. Verbal autopsy has been validated in multiple settings but has not been as widely evaluated for older populations as for younger age groups. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to provide empirical evidence of the value of verbal autopsy interviews in the context of population-based surveys of older adults by comparing the cause-of-death assignments d…
Dried blood spots
OBJECTIVES: This study investigates how factors related to collection, storage, transport time, and environmental conditions affect the quality and accuracy of analyses of dried blood spot (DBS) samples. METHODS: Data come from the 2016 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) DBS laboratory reports and the HRS merged with the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) Global Historical Climate Network Daily (NCDC GHCN-Daily) and the NCDC Local Climatological…
Education and adult mortality in middle-income countries
We find that adult mortality and risk factor gradients in MICs can be much different than the established patterns seen in modern HICs. Our results highlight that adult mortality gradients are not an inevitability and are not found in all populations. Understanding what factors give rise to inequalities in adult mortality and what can be done to minimize gradients while still ensuring continued mortality improvements in MICs is a crucial focus fo…
Differences between Men and Women in Mortality and the Health Dimensions of the Morbidity Process
BACKGROUND: Do men have worse health than women? This question is addressed by examining sex differences in mortality and the health dimensions of the morbidity process that characterize health change with age. We also discuss health differences across historical time and between countries. CONTENT: Results from national-level surveys and data systems are used to identify male/female differences in mortality rates, prevalence of diseases, physica…
Aging Populations, Mortality, and Life Expectancy
Life expectancy has long been seen as an indicator of the quality of life as well as the health of a population. Recent trends in US life expectancy show growing inequality in life expectancy for some socioeconomic and geographic groupings but diminishing inequality by race and gender. For example, while African Americans had gains in life expectancy, non-Hispanic white women with low levels of education experienced drops. Overall, the United Sta…
Educational Differences in the Prevalence of Dementia and Life Expectancy with Dementia
