The intersection of leaving out-of-home care and the risk of homelessness
Young people who have been placed with foster parents or in residential care during upbringing are disproportionately represented among young people experiencing homelessness. This international trend has prompted growing attention within social policy and research on the intersection of leaving care and homelessness. This scoping review analyses research published between 2000 and 2024, examining the scope of existing studies, methodologies, def…
Covid ‐19 Pandemic
Although welfare state developments are often researched as long‐term processes, crises such as the pandemic may induce short‐term reactions with long‐term effects. This article delves into the changes made to the income security of self‐employed workers in Denmark, Norway and Sweden during the pandemic and throughout 2023. The social partners in Scandinavia could be expected to be involved in the development of new income security institutions o…
A sociology of existence for a late modern world. Basic assumptions and conceptual tools
In the present article, we outline basic assumptions and conceptual tools for a sociology of existence. First, we address man's fundamental conditions of existence: that life's finitude and encounters with the uncertainty of existence are fundamental experiences that construct social relations. Second, we outline how existential meaning‐making and the ability to cope with the unpredictability of life are dependent on power resources, where especi…
A journey into the new employment service landscape of responsibilisation
The article analyses a new culture of responsibilisation implicated in a recent management reform in the Swedish Public Employment Service. Based on an interview study and organisational documents, it is shown that the reform entails a new form of responsibilisation of jobseekers as well as caseworkers. As jobseekers are expected to ‘carry their own case’ through the administrative job‐search process, they are obliged to manage tasks that used to…
Illuminating Existential Meaning
Current discussions on the importance of retirement are largely built on statistical analyses of longitudinal data showing that well-being seldom changes from before to after entering retirement, but is rather mainly dependent on the individual’s social resource position. In contrast, qualitatively oriented researchers underline that the retirement process is a complex life transition that needs to be further illuminated. To do this, however, we …
Transitional patterns when leaving care – Care leavers’ agency in a longitudinal perspective
Based on three waves of semi-structured interviews, this longitudinal qualitative study aims to understand the transition from out-of-home care (OHC; foster care, residential care) to independent adulthood, for a group of Swedish care leavers aged 16–20 years (n = 14). What are the main patterns in their transition process? How is agency reflected in these processes? The first interview (T1) was conducted when they were all still in OHC but on th…
The institutionalization of a new social cleavage
The objective of this article is to analyse the ideological influences, main reforms and social inequality outcomes of “the new work strategy”, i.e. the former Swedish centre-right Alliance government’s work-first approach. By studying government bills and reports, official statistics, and research on welfare and labour market policies, discourses, policy measures and their outcomes have been analysed. The main conclusion is that Sweden, the form…
Young care leavers' expectations of their future
This paper investigates young care leavers' expectations of their future after discharge from care. The results are based on qualitative longitudinal data where 16‐ to 21‐year‐old care leavers ( n = 15) were interviewed twice, first when still in care but planning for their discharge (T1) and the second time 6–9 months later (T2). The analysis using a general inductive approach showed that their expectations were dependent on the time horizon and…
Labour Market Policy under Conditions of Permanent Austerity
Social investment (SI) is part of a strategy to modernize the European welfare states by focusing on human resource development throughout the life‐course, while ensuring financial sustainability. Recognizing that this strategy was only partially implemented by the EU member states prior to the financial and Eurozone crises, this article investigates whether reforms and expenditure patterns in labour market policy (LMP) have moved more towards or…
När kallet ställs på sin spets
When the calling is brought to a head: Retirement from an existential sociology perspectiveIn this article we analyze how the meaning and value of work can emerge, be defined and redefined in relation to the coming of retirement, by focusing individuals with dedicated work approaches interpreted as a calling. By relying on an existential sociology framework we analyze the retirement process as an existential imperative, e.g. life phases or proces…
In-work poverty and labour market trajectories
Is in-work poverty a low-wage or an unemployment problem, and is it the same problem all across Europe? Because of the definitional ambiguity, we really do not know. In this article, we use longitudinal European Union-Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) data from 22 countries and derive a set of distinct clusters of labour market trajectories (LMTs) from information about monthly labour market position from a 36-month observation…
Towards standby‐ability
The article analyses S candinavian activation policies through the study of S wedish and D anish labour market policies since the early 1990s. Active labour market policies have been an important component in the social investment policies of the S candinavian countries, defined as ‘an active corner’ in E urope. In this study of the trajectories of S wedish and D anish labour market policies during the last two decades, I examined official docume…
Class and ideological orientations revisited
Studies of the relationship between class position and political outlooks still only have a limited understanding of the class-related mechanisms that matter for ideological orientations. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms that link class position and left/right and authoritarian/libertarian orientations. Besides main factors such as income, career prospects, job security, education, class origin and class identifica…
