America, the Old
1. Introduction Barack Obama’s election to the presidency in 2008 was greeted in most of Europe with joy, or at least relief, an emotion that was shared in a great many precincts in the United States. In both venues a curious mix of language attended these celebrations. A new day had dawned, it was said; the American people had turned a page to give themselves, and the rest of the world, a fresh start. Paradoxically, that meant that the USA would…

From Revivalism to Anti-Revivalism to Whig Politics
Calvin Colton (1789–1857) was an important publicist for both evangelical revivalism and the Whig party in antebellum America. Contrary to the standard historical interpretations, however, Colton did not move smoothly from the one to the other but took up political advocacy only after denouncing Yankee revivalism and its attendant social advocacy as threats to Church and State alike. At the same time his turn to episcopacy went together with a pr…
The Reorientation of American Protestantism, 1835-1845
In March 1835 Charles Finney told a gathering in New York City: "If the church will do all her duty, the millennium may come in this country in three years." This statement has often served as an epigram for the era, the motto of that movement for revivalism and social reform that, having already swept the churches, was to so infuse the culture with its moral imperatives as to make a Civil War against slavery inevitable and the hegemony of evange…
A History of Brief Time
It is inviting to write the history of dissenters who come out on the side of the angels. It is something else to write about dissenters who still believe in angels, and in devils too-who in fact ascribe some of the academic world's fundamental convictions to Satanic conspiracy. Thus one measure of Ronald Numbers's achievement in Creationists is the care with which he treats his subjects, who demonize evolutionary theory in precisely that way. ac…
Dancing in the Dark
The authors offer an insightful analysis of the symbiotic relationship between the popular entertainment industry and America's youth, suggest principles for evaluating popular art and entertainment, and propose strategies for rebuilding strong local cultures in the face of global media giants.
