  • Caprine Management during the Neolithic Period in the South Caucasus

  • New data on the connections of ancient settlers of Nakhchivan with the Near East

Veli Bakhshaliyev, Catherine Marro et al.•ARTICLE•Rossiiskaia arkheologiia•2024

Archaeological sites identified by studies of 2010–2021 on the territory of Nakhchivan made it possible to supply the gap between the Late Neolithic and Eneolithic Chalcolithic periods. The presence of ancient Eastern features – Halaf and Obeid ones – is noted in the materials of Nakhchivan Tepe, Uçan-Ağıl, Bulovkaya and Uzunoba. It can be assumed that the settlements of Nakhchivan Tepe and Bulovkaya were strongholds or colonies of newcomers – be…

  • Between Valleys and Mountains. The Dzedzvebi Plateau as an Intermediate Settlement Site of Late Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age Communities in the Lesser Caucasus

    Open Access•Thomas Stöllner, Irina Gambashidze et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Austriaca•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

The question of how societies have appropriated the resource-rich montane landscapes of the South Caucasus since the 5th millennium BCE and in which temporal rhythms this development took place is linked with regional mobility as well as the social and economic negotiation of the participating communities. Intermontane settle- ment areas like the large Dzedzvebi Plateau near Kazreti in south- east Georgia probably played an important role as inte…

  • Predictive use of modern reference osteological collections for disentangling the shape of Eurasian equid cheek teeth and metapodials in archaeological material

    Open Access•Azadeh F Mohaseb, Raphaël Cornette et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•Referencias: 56

Equids have shaped past Eurasian societies in many ways. This applies in particular to domestic horses, donkeys, and their hybrids. Key to documenting modes of exploitation and cultural trajectories in past societies is the correct taxonomic classification of tooth and bone specimens found in archaeological sites. However, close osteomorphological resemblance of wild and domestic equids and their economically valuable hybrids, that is, mules and …

Recent archaeological research has highlighted the potential role of mobile pastoral groups in the diffusion of raw materials and technological innovations between the southern Caucasus and north‐western Iran from the Neolithic onwards. Two successive projects, PAST‐OBS and SCOPE, were designed to explore this hypothesis through the study of obsidian consumption patterns from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age using a flexible analytical strategy th…

In Anatolia (and the Near East in general) archaeological excavations occur more often in large urban centers than rural settlements. Consequently, our understanding of past subsistence practices is mainly based on assemblages from urban contexts. Solely urban subsistence strategies cannot be used for determining regional trends. The study of 17 faunal assemblages from urban and rural settlements located in the Upper Tigris River area illustrates…

  • Provisioning an Urban Center under Foreign Occupation

Canan Çakırlar, Lionel Gourichon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern Mediterranean…•2014•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 11

The effects of foreign military interventions on production and distribution systems in occupied lands are commonly assessed through the study of textual sources and pottery typologies in Bronze Age archaeology and historiography. In this article, we explore the zooarchaeological record of the recently uncovered Late Bronze IIA deposits at Alalakh (Tell Atchana) to test whether the Hittite intrusion into Syria had any effect on the economic organ…

  • On the Genesis of the Kura-Araxes phenomenon

Catherine Marro, Veli Bakhshaliyev et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2014•Citada por: 8

The formative processes of the Kura-Araxes cultural complex, in particular the date and circumstances of its rise, have been debated for decades. This article takes advantage of the recent data retrieved from Ovçular Tepesi, a Late Chalcolithic settlement located in Nakhchivan by the Arpaçay river, to demonstrate that the earliest manifestation of the Kura-Araxes phenomenon should be dated back at least to the last quarter of the 5th millennium B…

Hybrid camels, intentional crosses between dromedaries and bactrian camels, are prized for their robustness and endurance. They were the prime vehicles of short and long distance caravan trade in a large area between Greece and Mongolia until the whole-scale introduction of motorized transport. This paper proposes a model for the zooarchaeological study of camel hybridization as a culture-historical phenomenon based on ethnographic and ethnohisto…

Socio-economic organisation, subsistence strategies and environmental exploitation still remain largely open questions for the Late Chalcolithic period (ca. 4500–3500 BC) in southern Caucasus even though they are of prime importance for understanding the development of post-Neolithic societies in these semi-arid and mountainous areas. Interdisciplinary bioarchaeological research can, however, provide valuable new insights into these issues. In th…
