  • Accommodation Through Online Platforms During Covid-19

    Juan F Prados-Castillo, Mónica de Castro-Pardo et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Culture & Communication•2025

Online platforms act as tourist accommodation intermediaries and have generated negative societal attitudes. This study, involving fieldwork in Spain in May 2020 (600 surveys), analyzes a new element of social rejection of tourist housing activity. In the context of the COVID-19 health crisis, the fear of contagious diseases transmitted by tourists is analyzed. The aim is to determine, based on the perception of various stakeholders involved in t…

  • How important are borders for tourism? The case of Europe

Open Access•Federico Carril-Caccia, José María Martín Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2024

Using a bilateral dataset of trips for 32 European countries for the period 2012–2019, we aim to gauge the size and evolution of the border effect on tourism: the extent to which domestic tourism is greater (or lesser) than international tourism. We found that the tourism flow within countries was 24 times greater than between countries. Also, we show that, relative to 2012, the border effect diminished by 13% in 2019. Our results suggest that th…

  • A fuzzy-DEA water sustainability index

Open Access•Mónica Castro, José María Martín Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Environment Development and…•2023

The current global freshwater crisis threatens the present and future supply of water as a resource for humans. The scarcity of drinking water and the dependence of the food industry on water-intensive supply chains require the urgent development of strategies to analyze and guarantee the water sustainability of countries. This study proposes a fuzzy-data envelopment analysis composite index that measures, from a benchmarking approach, water sust…

  • Análisis comparativo de la estacionalidad turística en dos destinos fronterizos

Open Access•José María Martín Martins, Paula Serdeira Azevedo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism Analysis…•2023

  • Constructing Knowledge Economy Composite Indicators using an MCA-DEA approach

    Open Access•José Manuel Guaita Martínez, J M Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Research-Ekonomska…•2021

Composite indicators are a remarkably useful tool in policy analysis and public communication for assessing phenomena, such as Knowledge-Based Economy (KBE), that cannot be expressed by means of a simple indicator. The objective of this study is to propose and compare three MCA-DEA models from a “Benefit of Doubt” (BoD) approach in order to build KBE Composite Indicators. To show the effectiveness of the models, this paper proposes a case study o…

  • Comprehensive evaluation of the tourism seasonality using a synthetic DP2indicator

    J M Martins, José María Martín Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Geographies•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 57

Tourism plays an important role in the economic development of several regions over the world. Imbalances in the activity levels throughout the year will condition the positive effects generated by the sector given that work stability and economic flows are dependent upon it. The measurement of seasonality based on indicators that are built using individual variables offers only a partial picture of the situation, or even contradictory results su…

  • Why Regulation Is Needed in Emerging Markets in the Tourism Sector

Open Access•José María Martín Martins, Jose María Martín‐martín et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 43

The neoclassical ideal has defended the idea that markets, in a context of limited regulation, reach an optimal equilibrium automatically. We analyze this assertion in an applied manner with a case study of the emerging online market of intermediation of tourist apartments. The lack of regulation in this market causes many social and economic impacts on local communities, which can jeopardize the survival of the activity. We conclude that an anal…
