An investigation into double energy vulnerability in Sri Lanka
The current literature on energy poverty predominantly focuses on energy-related concerns; affordability, accessibility and other energy-related inconveniences within the home. Nevertheless, transport constitutes a significant component in household energy consumption, strongly affected by fuel prices, yet it is largely omitted from discussions on energy poverty. Research on double energy vulnerability (DEV) where people are at increased risk of …
Implementing a circular economy in regional Australia
Implementation challenges and the lack of regionally focused interventions are some critiques of circular economy models in the literature. This study examines barriers to adoption of circularity in construction projects through a case study set in the regional town of Alice Springs, Australia, using data from in-depth interviews of various stakeholders (clients, contractors, recyclers etc.). Examining construction waste through a socio-technical…
Well‐Being and Sustainable Development
Well‐being transcends the complex and often competing sustainability dimensions. As such, a population's well‐being serves as a bellwether for sustainable development and is an important consideration of development progress. Since the 2015 launch of the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs), well‐being‐focused research has expanded significantly. Sustainable Development is among the few journals consistently contributing to this field. A timel…

Enhancing Online Teaching of Business Statistics
Learning statistics can be challenging for many students, due to their inability to engage in statistical reasoning and application of techniques. This challenge becomes compounded in online learning contexts where students are spatially and temporally separated from the teacher. This paper describes and explains a case of theory-driven interventions designed to enhance the learning experiences of students enrolled in two similar business statist…
Dynamic modelling of consumption patterns using LA-Aids
The traditional applied demand system estimation assumes that when consumer income and commodity prices change, the consumers instantaneously fully adjust to a new consumption equilibrium level and use a static demand system such as Static Linear Almost Ideal Demand System (Static LA-AIDS) for estimation. However, in real-life situations, such an assumption does not hold as consumers take time to settle to a new consumption equilibrium level. Hen…
New Approach to Measure Wellbeing
Understanding wellbeing is fundamental to any effort to enhance it. Using the latest World Values Survey (WVS), this study examines the incidence, intensity, and determinants of wellbeing in Bangladesh by constructing a multidimensional wellbeing index (MDWI). The study also provides some insights into how wellbeing changed during 2002–2018 in Bangladesh. The MDWI is calculated using twenty-five indicators corresponding to seven domains. The resu…
Are Factors Associated with Adult Refugees' Settlement different from Well-Being? A Longitudinal Study focusing on Gender and Age in Australia
Using three waves of data and tracing the same refugees over time, this paper shows that some factors associated with settlement experience are different from life satisfaction. Evidence shows that although settlement experience has not improved over time, life satisfaction of both male and female refugees has. The non-linear effect of age on life satisfaction disappears over time while that of settlement experience lingers on. Discrimination aff…
Deteriorating Australia-China relations and prospects for the Australian tourism industry
Inbound tourism from China contributes to around 15% of Australian tourist arrivals. However, the political and trade relations between the two countries began to deteriorate since 2018. Considering this environment, using annual data from 1991 to 2019, this study enables the identification of alternative tourism markets for Australia. The results suggest that maintaining price competitiveness and consumer satisfaction should be high priorities o…
Relative deprivation, inequality and the Covid-19 pandemic
There is a growing concern that inequalities are hindering health outcomes. This paper's primary objective is to investigate the role of relative deprivation and inequality in explaining the daily spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. For this purpose, we use secondary cross-sectional data across 119 (developed and developing) countries from January 2020 - to April 2021. For the empirical analysis, we use a recent dynamic panel data modelling approach…
Poverty, Food Consumption, and Economic Development
Household electrification, food consumption and welfare nexus in Sri Lanka
A growing body of literature suggests that access to electricity has a positive impact on household’s living standards and social welfare. This paper sheds new light on this discussion. Using expenditure dependent equivalence scales, this paper examines the impact of electricity access on food consumption economies of scale (FCES) and thereby the poverty measurements of households with and without access to electricity in Sri Lanka during 1990-20…
Are Effects of Violence on Life Satisfaction Gendered? A Case Study of Indigenous Australians
Dynamic modelling of inter‐relationship between tourism, energy consumption, CO 2 emissions and economic growth in South Asia
Tourism is an important economic driver and plays a critical role in the economic development of South Asian countries. However, tourism also brings about some inevitable consequences on the environmental quality of these countries. Using the Autoregressive Distributed Lags, Vector Error‐Correction Model and Panel frameworks, we investigate the inter‐relationships between tourism, energy consumption, CO 2 emissions and gross domestic product (GDP…
Energy consumption, tourism, economic growth and CO 2 emissions nexus in India
India is one of the fastest growing nations in the world with ample scope for renewable energy. Nevertheless, challenges in expansion of renewable energy consumption have resulted in pollutant emissions continuing to be a noteworthy environmental concern in India. This paper investigates the relationship between energy consumption, CO2 emissions, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and international tourist arrivals in India during 1991-2018, using the…
Home Away from Home
This article examines the correlation of post-migration factors and in particular parental mental health with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and happiness levels of adolescent refugee migrants in Australia, with a special emphasis on associated age and gender differences. Data were sourced from the child module in the 2015–2016 Building a New Life in Australia data set. Results indicate that factors associated with happiness are quite diff…
Poverty Implications of Household Headship and Food Consumption Economies of Scales
Nexus between drinking patterns, gender and life satisfaction
Excessive alcohol consumption results in a broad range of health problems and other social issues, such as violence, social disorder and family breakdown. As such, alcohol consumption is considered as a critical social policy issue in Australia. In this study, we have used ordered logit models to estimate the probability of an Indigenous person consuming alcohol and to assess the impact of alcohol consumption on self‐perceived life satisfaction. …
Examining Multidimensional Poverty in Sri Lanka
Dynamic trends in household poverty and inequality in Sri Lanka
The heterogeneity in female-headed households (FHHs) and the differences in household size and composition make the comparison of poverty across male- and FHHs’ complex. The differences in ethno-religion and patriarchal social norms embedded in the various cultures to which these female heads belong also create extra challenges when analysing female headship and poverty. This study, which investigates the poverty and expenditure inequality by gen…
