Does cultural identity influence the probability of employment during economic crises
This paper examines the relationships between cultural identity and immigrants’ likelihood of finding employment during economic crises. Drawing on Italian data from the Social Condition and Integration of Foreign Citizens (SCIF) survey, we develop a multidimensional measure of cultural identity that incorporates both self-identification and observable factors. The analysis reveals that cultural identity significantly affects employment outcomes,…

Methodological individualism and agent-based computational simulation
This study reflects on Harold Kincaid and Jule Zahle’s view that there is no necessary association between methodological individualism and agent-based models because the analysis of social phenomena in terms of the latter cannot always be regarded as an implementation of the former. Their view remains in contention with the standpoint of several philosophers of science and social scientists, including Chen and Di Iorio. Kincaid and Zahle’s main …
Occupational Stress, Working from Home, and Job Sustainability
Aim of the paper is to analyse the occurrence of occupational stress across European Union countries, considering gender and job sustainability as determinants, with a specific attention to the effects of home-based work. Although COVID-19 pandemic has brought such issues into a novel spotlight, to detect the response pattern towards occupational stress we chose to employ the latest official data collected by the Sixth European Working Condition …
Synthetic indicators to analyze work-related physical and psychosocial risk factors
In modern workplaces, alongside physical, chemical, and biological hazards, other risks are linked to the organisation of work and to the nature of the work itself. This paper investigates the association between workers’ well-being and both psychosocial and physical risk factors at work proposing a synthetic measure suitable to generate insights on well-being at work and on individual risk factors. Exploiting data from the European Working Condi…
Fiscal reaction functions for the advanced economies revisited
We revisit the relationship between the primary balances/GDP and debt/GDP ratios (fiscal reaction function, FRF), in the advanced economies, showing that using adequate tests and estimators leads to question the validity of the current consensus. Using data for 1961–2019, we find that long-run FRFs exist only in a small number of advanced economies (Belgium, Germany, Greece, Norway, Portugal and Sweden), with polynomial effects with fiscal fatigu…
The Structure of Complexity and the Limits of Collective Intentionality
According to Searle’s theory of collective intentionality, the fundamental structure of any society can be accounted for in terms of cooperative mechanisms that create deontic relations. This paper criticizes Searle’s standpoint on the ground that, while his social ontology can make sense of simple systems of interaction like symphony orchestras and football teams, the whole coordinative structure of the modern market society cannot be explained …
On situational analysis and the explanatory power of mechanisms
According to the dominant view, analytical sociology is largely incompatible with the deductive-nomological model because the latter allows neither accurate and precise explanations, nor explanations that give individuals and their actions a privileged role. This view neglects two relevant facts about the deductive-nomological model as understood by Hempel and Popper and some of their precursors such as J.S. Mill and Weber. The first is the relat…
Analytical sociology and critical realism
This chapter compares analytical sociology and critical realism, focusing on the criticisms of the former developed by theorists of the latter. In defending the research program of analytical sociology, we argue that these criticisms are unconvincing. The article consists of four parts. The first argues that critical realism is based on a foundationalist theory about the unobservable deep structures of reality that is incompatible with the fallib…
On the connection between agent-based simulation and methodological individualism
This paper investigates the relationship between methodological individualism (MI) and agent-based simulation (ABS). We use a thesis defended by Caterina Marchionni and Petri Ylikoski (2013) as the starting point of our approach. According to this thesis, since MI is often considered to be a reductionist orientation, it is confusing and meaningless to assume that ABS, which is a non-reductionist and emergentist explanatory model, is committed to …
World 3 and Methodological Individualism in Popper’s Thought
Popper’s theory of World 3 is often regarded as incongruent with his defense of methodological individualism. This article criticizes this widespread view. Methodological individualism is said to be at odds with three crucial assumptions of the theory of World 3: (a) the impossibility of reducing World 3 to subjective mental states because it exists objectively, (b) the view that the mental functions cannot be explained by assuming that individua…
Hayek and the hermeneutics of mind
The article investigates the connections between Hayek's cognitive psychology and his methodological individualism. It argues that Hayek's theory of the sensory order, which is his less-studied scientific contribution, supports an original but largely unknown argument in favour of the Verstehen approach of methodological individualism. Hayek merges a theory of the temporality of knowledge as understood by phenomenological hermeneutics, and notabl…
