A Six-Decade Friendship
I knew Simon Ottenberg for nearly sixty years. We met in 1975 in a New York hotel room where he interviewed me for a Foreign Area Fellowship, which I got, thanks to his positive recommendation. We met subsequently at ASA and ACASA conferences and became quite good friends in the 1970s through the ‘90s, when I first visited him and his then wife, Nora, in Seattle. Simon took over her book business after her death, and ran it out of his home for se…
Simon Ottenberg
Simon Ottenberg, Emeritus Professor at the University of Washington, died in Seattle on November 1, 2023 at the age of 100. He was an anthropologist, sailing enthusiast, collector, book seller, avid puzzler, and longtime supporter of contemporary arts from West Africa and the Pacific Northwest—and a fine, much-loved person. Ottenberg is well known as a distinguished anthropologist, yet he should be equally celebrated as a superlative art and cult…
Nurturing The Arts of Ghana , 1972–1977
My direct engagement with arts in Ghana occurred during four days in 1967, when I stayed with Roy and Sophie Sieber in Legon. In 1972, I spent six months researching festivals and arts of personal adornment, among other forms. In 1973, after my return to University of California, Santa-Barbara (UCSB), I held a seminar on Ghanaian art, which led to seven students traveling to Ghana for fieldwork in summer, 1974. Observing his exceptional research …
Deep Ties
Doran and I interviewed one another in spring, 1972, when I was recovering from appendicitis in a hospital bed; after a half hour of talk, I hoped he would choose UCSB for his graduate work. He did. Although he started while I was in Ghana in 1972–73, he took my Fall ‘73 course on African arts and wrote an excellent if wordy term paper to which I assigned an A-minus—for him a low grade he never ceased kidding me about, because I wrote extensive c…
A Mighty Tree
Several African peoples, on the passing of a great man, will avoid the word “death,” preferring the poetic indirection of a mighty tree falling. Mortality is not final in Africa, nor is it for us. Fallen trees regenerate; they still exist, if on a new plane, and remain active. We survivors have grown from the seeds of those trees, whose broad branches in life sheltered councils of elders and provided the fruits we eat and the wood from which we h…

Igbo Arts and Ethnicity
Some months ago, when reading Elechi Amadi's affecting diary of the Nigerian Civil War, Sunset in Biafra, I was acutely reminded that not all peoples generally called Igbo are particularly comfortable being so labeled. Amadi is an Ikwere, which he explicitly calls a non-Igbo tribe, along with Etche, Ekpeye, Engenni, Ogba, and Egbema. All these peoples living south and west of Owerri and north of the Niger delta were placed by Forde and Jones (195…

I Am Not Myself
Photography in Africa
The compelling nature of the photograph-as work of art, as documentary record, and in its impact on life itself-makes this imagery and its attendant technology critical to the study and understanding of the arts in Africa. This journal itself has celebrated the vital role of photography, at least implicitly, by publishing thousands of black-andwhite and color pictures, and a few specific photographic studies. Americans, Europeans, and, increasing…

The Arts of Ghana
Art Studies in Ghana
are alive and well. A great deal of traditional art is being used continuously in shrines, stool rooms, festivals and other contexts; sculptors still receive commissions, textile industries thrive, while still other art and craft specialists make objects for the tourist trade and for export. Although The Arts of Ghana catalogue and exhibition (Doran H. Ross and Herbert Cole, 1977; organized by the UCLA Museum of Cultural History) are far from bei…
