Impact of an integrated intervention package during preconception, pregnancy, and early childhood on inflammation, IGF-1, IGFBP3 during first 6 months of life
Early-life interventions targeting maternal and child health, nutrition, and psychosocial care may influence infant growth and immune development by modulating systemic inflammation and growth factor pathways. However, causal evidence on comprehensive, integrated interventions initiated during early life remains limited. This study was nested in a factorial randomized controlled trial involving women aged 18–30 years. Participants were randomized…
Mapping Human Genetic Diversity in Asia
Patterns of Early Migration In order to gain insight into various migrations that must have happened during movement of early humans into Asia and the subsequent populating of the largest continent on Earth, the HUGO Pan-Asian SNP Consortium (p. 1541 ) analyzed genetic variation in almost 2000 individuals representing 73 Asian and two non-Asian populations. The results suggest that there may have been a single major migration of people into Asia …

Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in two tribal populations of the sub-Himalayan region of India
This study was undertaken to estimate prevalence of metabolic syndrome in traditional societies in the sub-Himalayan region and to assess the impact of modernization on the risk to the syndrome. Two tribal populations--Toto and Bhutia--with a shared ancestry and habitat were selected. Some Bhutians have adopted a modern lifestyle. The study design permitted assessment of the relative roles of lifestyle and genetic factors in influencing the preva…
Mitochondrial DNA variation in ranked caste groups of Maharashtra (India) and its implication on genetic relationships and origins
The upper caste group, Brahmin, is genetically distinct from the middle and lower caste groups. However, in view of the highest frequency of haplogroup M among the Brahmin, it appears that there may have been recruitment from other populations into this group

Weekly variation in work-output of pluckers in tea gardens in northern West Bengal
Data on daily work-output (kg of leaves plucked) of Oraon pluckers in tea gardens of Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, India, are analysed. While on any particular day of the week there is no significant difference in work-output of males and females, there is a significant between-day variation in work-output for both sexes. Mean work-output steadily decreases as the week progresses, perhaps due to the cumulative effect of fatigue.
Principal axis analysis of gene frequency data
When a set of populations are compared in respect of gene frequencies, and the chi‐square test of heterogeneity is found to be significant, it is pertinent to find out whether the heterogeneity can be explained by a few linear combinations of the gene frequencies, and the total heterogeneity chi‐square value can be partitioned as the sum of heterogeneity chi‐square values contributed by the linear combinations. The present report describes such a…
Genetic variation in the Aleuts of the Pribilof Islands and the Eskimos of Kodiak Island
A sample of Aleuts residing in the Pribilof Islands of St. Paul (N = 163) and St. George (N = 62) and Eskimo residents of Kodiak Island (N = 294) have been typed for genetic variation at 31 discrete genetic markers. Of these, 16 were polymorphic and 15 were monomorphic. Several private polymorphisms previously reported in Eskimo or Alaskan Amerindian populations were absent in both the Aleuts and Kodiak Island Eskimos. Genetic distance analysis s…

Genealogical and gene marker data from the closely related species Macaca mulatta and Macaca fascicularis have been used to search for linkage between genes coding for the blood proteins albumin, carbonic anhydrase 1 and 2, diaphorase 1 and 2, group‐specific component, glucose phosphate isomerase, hemoglobin alpha chains, isocitrate dehydrogenase, prealbumin, and transferrin. The results are consistent with conservation of the linkage between the…
Estimation of relative electrophoretic mutation rates from rare alleles in a sample
The theoretical justifications for using the number of rare alleles observed in a sample and the heterozygosity contributed by such alleles to estimate the relative electrophoretic mutation rate (REMR) are given in this note. It is shown that the estimator using the number of alleles has comparatively less bias. While the total heterozygosity contributed by all alleles at a locus has been previously used to estimate REMR with success, an analogou…
Inheritance of digital arches in humans
From the fingertip pattern analysis of 125 families with 376 children from Velanadu Brahmin and 100 families with 286 children from Telaganya Brahmin caste sects of Andhra Pradesh, India, the occurrence of an arch on at least one of the ten finger tips is shown to be aggregated in families. The mode of aggregation is in conformity with a major dominant gene with 0.28 chance of penetrance. This is to some extent contradictory to the result publish…
On Natural Selection and the Inheritance of Wealth [and Comments and Reply]
Greater reproductive variance among males than among females is presented as a component of natural selection's influence in determining preferential treatment of males in the inheritance of wealth. In conjunction, the transmission of sex chromosomes and their attendant probabilities of carrying genes identical by descent are traced for several generations in order to illustrate a male bias in species whose male sex is heterogametic (XY) while th…

Environmental Orientations
A new approach to social ecology is offered which attempts to integrate a variety of theories, each of which approaches the problem of man's relationship to his environment from a different perspective. It is postulated that man refers to the environment to achieve not one, but a multiplicity of purposes. To each purpose corresponds a type of environmental orientation. Four such orientations are distinguished: the instrumental, the territorial, t…
On Bennett's measure of sex dimorphism
A modified measure of sex dimorphism for quantitative traits is suggested considering the regions of nonoverlap of the distributions of the trait in the two sex groups. Some inadequacies of an earlier measure that disregards the presence of members of the opposite sex group beyond the threshold value discriminating the two distributions are indicated
