Motivational Interviewing Targeting Risky Sex in HIV-Positive Young Thai Men Who Have Sex with Men
From ideas to efficacy
Given the critical role of behavior in preventing and treating chronic diseases, it is important to accelerate the development of behavioral treatments that can improve chronic disease prevention and outcomes. Findings from basic behavioral and social sciences research hold great promise for addressing behaviorally based clinical health problems, yet there is currently no established pathway for translating fundamental behavioral science discover…
The initial feasibility of a computer-based motivational intervention for adherence for youth newly recommended to start antiretroviral treatment
Young people represent the largest number of new HIV infections, thus youth living with HIV (YLH) are likely to be the largest group to initiate antiretroviral treatment (ART). Adherence patterns for behaviorally infected YLH are not adequate to effectively manage the disease; therefore, novel interventions are needed to improve medication adherence. The purpose of the current study, which will precede a randomized controlled trial, was to assess…
Correlation Between Use of Antiretroviral Adherence Devices by HIV-Infected Youth and Plasma HIV RNA and Self-Reported Adherence
African American Emerging Adults’ Perspectives on Taking Asthma Controller Medication
This study included African Americans with asthma in emerging adulthood, a developmental period largely neglected in the research literature but known to be a time of great risk asthma morbidity and mortality. We conducted thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews ( N = 19) to explore barriers to adherence in the context of the transition into adulthood. Key themes for non-adherence emerged after careful follow-up prompting by the interview…
Multisystemic therapy for poorly adherent youth with HIV
Adherence to antiretroviral medication for the treatment of HIV is a significant predictor of virologic suppression and is associated with dramatic reductions in mortality and morbidity and other improved clinical outcomes for pediatric patient populations. Effective strategies for addressing adherence problems in youth infected with HIV are needed and require significant attention to the complex interplay of multiple, interacting causal risk fac…
Motivational Interviewing Targeting Risk Behaviors for Youth Living with HIV in Thailand
The Use of Cell Phone Support for Non-adherent HIV-Infected Youth and Young Adults
Barriers to Medication Adherence in Behaviorally and Perinatally Infected Youth Living with HIV
Psychosocial factors and substance use in high-risk youth living with HIV
The purpose of the study was to test relationships between psychosocial factors and alcohol and illicit drug use among high-risk youth living with HIV (YLH). One hundred eighty-six high-risk youth with HIV (defined as those with a substance use problem, sexual risk problem, or medication adherence problem) were enrolled across five cities (ages 16-24). Alcohol and illicit drug use were measured with the alcohol, smoking, and substance involvement…
Using Motivational Interviewing in HIV Field Outreach With Young African American Men Who Have Sex With Men
Objectives. We sought to determine whether field outreach with motivational interviewing, as compared with traditional field outreach, leads to increases in HIV counseling and testing and rates of return for test results among young African American men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods. In a randomized, 2-group, repeated-measures design, 96 young African American MSM completed a motivational interviewing—based field outreach session and 92 yo…
Motivational interviewing by peer outreach workers
Youth living with HIV (YLH) are at particularly high risk for poor retention in HIV primary care. This study utilized Motivational Interviewing (MI) to improve youth retention in primary care and compared the fidelity and outcomes of peer outreach workers (POW) to masters level staff (MLS). Eighty-seven YLH were randomized to receive two MI sessions from POW or MLS. YLH were aged 16-29 and 92% were African American. Thirty-seven audiotaped sessio…
Transtheoretical model and risky sexual behaviour in HIV + youth in Thailand
The purpose of the study was to determine the applicability of the Transtheoretical Model for predicting unprotected intercourse in HIV+ Thai youth. Questionnaires and interviews about sexual behaviour, readiness to change, self-efficacy, substance use, emotional distress and social support were obtained from 70 HIV+ Thai youth (ages 17 to 25). Path analysis suggested the model was an excellent fit with the data. Readiness to change but not self-…
Social Support and Disclosure as Predictors of Mental Health in HIV-Positive Youth
The purpose of this study was to describe mental health symptoms in a sample of 66 HIV-positive youth (ages 16-25) and to evaluate social support, disclosure, and physical status as predictors of symptoms. Data were collected from January 2002 to May 2003. As measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), 50% of the youth scored above the cutoff for clinically significant mental health symptoms, thus highlighting the need for mental health servic…
Stigma Scale Revised
Ancillary services and retention of youth in HIV care
The purpose of this prospective study was to test the relationship between receipt of ancillary services (case management, advocacy, counseling) over six months and retention of youth in HIV care in the subsequent six months. Medical records of 75 youth (ages 16-25) enrolled in a comprehensive HIV care program at a university-affiliated medical center in Detroit, Michigan were reviewed for receipt of services in a 12-month period. The youth progr…
Sexual attitudes, pattern of communication, and sexual behavior among unmarried out-of-school youth in China
A substantial proportion of out-of-school youth engage in risky sexual behaviors. Prevention programs that empower communication and sexual negotiation skills, and promote condom use should be implemented for this vulnerable group
Transtheoretical Model and substance use in HIV-positive youth
The purpose of the study was to test constructs of the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) for predicting alcohol and other drug use in HIV-positive youth (ages 16-25). Questionnaires and interviews about alcohol and other drug use, stage of change, self-efficacy, emotional distress and social support were obtained from 64 HIV-positive youth. Structural equation modeling with standard errors determined by methods appropriate to small samples, demonstrat…
Psychosocial factors and treatment adherence in paediatric HIV/Aids
A social ecological model provides a promising framework for understanding the individual, family, and societal factors contributing to non-adherence to treatment of paediatric HIV. This study explored which factors relevant to this model are associated with caregivers' adherence and child health outcomes. A cross-sectional design was utilized to assess relationships among current individual, familial, extra-familial factors, caregiver adherence,…
HIV-related knowledge, stigma, and willingness to disclose
Increasing HIV knowledge is a focus of many HIV education and prevention efforts. While the bivariate relationship of HIV serostatus disclosure with HIV-related knowledge and stigma has been reported in the literature, little is known about the mediation effect of stigma on the relationship of HIV knowledge with HIV serostatus disclosure. Data from 4,208 rural-to-urban migrants in China were analyzed to explore this issue. Overall, 70% of respond…
