  • Seal Occurrence and Habitat Use during Summer in Petermann Fjord, Northwestern Greenland

    Open Access•Kate Lomac-MacNair, Martin Jakobsson et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2018

Ice-associated seals are considered especially susceptible and are potentially the first to modify distribution and habitat use in response to physical changes associated with the changing climate. Petermann Glacier, part of a unique ice-tongue fjord environment in a rarely studied region of northwestern Greenland, lost substantial sections of its ice tongue during major 2010 and 2012 calving events. As a result, changes in seal habitat may have …

  • A Reconstruction of Regional and Global Temperature for the Past 11,300 Years

    Open Access•Shaun A Marcott, Jeremy D Shakun et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2013

Exceptional Now The climate has been warming since the industrial revolution, but how warm is climate now compared with the rest of the Holocene? Marcott et al. (p. 1198 ) constructed a record of global mean surface temperature for more than the last 11,000 years, using a variety of land- and marine-based proxy data from all around the world. The pattern of temperatures shows a rise as the world emerged from the last deglaciation, warm conditions…

  • Pacific Paleoclimate North and South. Polar twins or Bipolar Seesaw? Or something else

    Open Access•Alan C Mix, Alan Mix•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • A Speleothem Record of Younger Dryas Cooling, Klamath Mountains, Oregon, USA

    Open Access•David A Vacco, Peter U Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

A well-dated δ 18 O record in a stalagmite from a cave in the Klamath Mountains, Oregon, with a sampling interval of 50 yr, indicates that the climate of this region cooled essentially synchronously with Younger Dryas climate change elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere. The δ 18 O record also indicates significant century-scale temperature variability during the early Holocene. The δ 13 C record suggests increasing biomass over the cave through t…

  • Using stable isotope analysis to obtain dietary profiles from old hair

    Open Access•Diana Roy, Diana M Roy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2005•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 19

Stable isotope composition of human tissue reflects that of foods consumed, and can provide information about diet independent of artifactual remains. Here we refine and test this method by analyzing nitrogen (delta(15)N) and carbon (delta(13)C) isotope ratios in historic North American Plains Indians hair. Gas-source isotope-ratio mass spectrometry provides high-precision data for both delta(15)N and delta(13)C (+/-0.2 per thousand, 1 sigma) in …

  • Environmental processes of the ice age

Open Access•Alan C Mix, Edouard Bard et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2001

  • Pleistocene Precipitation Balance in the Amazon Basin Recorded in Deep Sea Sediments

    Open Access•Sara Harris, Sara E Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1999

Terrigenous sediments from Ceara Rise in the western tropical Atlantic Ocean record Pleistocene Amazon Basin climate variability. Iron oxides and oxyhydroxides in this region originate mainly from chemically leached Amazon lowland soils. Concentrations of goethite and hematite in the terrigenous fraction consistently peak during transitions from glacial to interglacial periods, suggesting an increased proportion of erosive products derived from t…

  • AMS Radiocarbon Dates on Foraminifera from Deep Sea Sediments

Open Access•Michael Andree, Hans Oeschger et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1986•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 2

14 C ages were determined on samples of foraminifera separated from cores from three areas of the tropical Pacific (East Pacific Rise, Oontong Java Plateau, and South China Sea). Analyses were made on four planktonic species and on mixed benthics. The purpose of the multiple analysis on planktonic species is to assess the importance of artifacts resulting from the bioturbation-abundance change couple, from the bioturbation-partial dissolution cou…

  • Eolian Evidence for Spatial Variability of Late Quaternary Climates in Tropical Africa

    Open Access•Edward M Pokras, Alan C Mix•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1985

Study of the eolian fraction of late Quaternary sediments from the tropical Atlantic reveals that two modes of long-term climate variability have existed in tropical Africa during the last 150,000 yr. Tropical northwest Africa (i.e., the southwestern Sahara and Sahel) was driest during glaciations and stades, but wetter than at present during interglaciations and interstades. This may be a response to ice sheets at higher latitudes, via equatorwa…

  • Oxygen-Isotope Analyses and Pleistocene Ice Volumes

    Open Access•Alan C Mix, William F Ruddiman•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1984

The oxygen-isotope record from fossil foraminifera in deep-sea sediments is commonly used as a proxy for global ice volume. The linkage between δ 18 O and ice volume, however, is probably nonlinear. We have developed a simple numerical model of the isotopic response of the oceans to ice-volume change. The major features it simulates are (1) the changing mean isotopic composition of snow as a function of ice volume (colder snow temperatures forced…

  • The Last Interglacial Ocean

    Open Access•Rose Marie L Cline, James D Hays et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1984

The final effort of the CLIMAP project was a study of the last interglaciation, a time of minimum ice volume some 122,000 yr ago coincident with the Substage 5e oxygen isotopic minimum. Based on detailed oxygen isotope analyses and biotic census counts in 52 cores across the world ocean, last interglacial sea-surface temperatures (SST) were compared with those today. There are small SST departures in the mid-latitude North Atlantic (warmer) and t…
