Organizational Climate and Culture
This article first reviews the history of the research on organizational climate and then organizational culture with definitions of each. The research approaches to both constructs are explicated in some detail, with climate being characterized by survey/quantitative approaches and culture by qualitative methods. Early climate struggles with levels and validity issues are followed by summaries of research since the 1980s on specific outcomes suc…
The Influence of Transformational Leadership and Leader Attitudes on Subordinate Attitudes and Implementation Success
Recent literature has focused on identifying factors that facilitate or impede the implementation of innovation in organizations. Attitudes toward change and transformational leadership are regarded as important determinants of implementation success. This study tested a multilevel model of transformational leadership and leaders’ attitudes toward the innovation being implemented as predictors of staff attitudes and implementation success. Partic…
The Role of Leadership in Organizational Implementation and Sustainment in Service Agencies
Implementation is posited as a multiphasic process, influenced by a range of factors, within a multilevel context. While there appears to be a general consensus that every implementation initiative will have a unique combination of influences that vary in importance across the implementation phases, leadership is an essential tenant throughout implementation frameworks, models, and theories. The exploration, preparation, implementation, sustainme…
Validation of the Implementation Leadership Scale (ILS) with Supervisors’ Self-Ratings
Organizational Climate
Organizational climate refers to employees' shared perceptions of the policies, practices and procedures and the behaviors that get rewarded, supported, and expected in a work setting. As a distinct construct from individual work attitudes like job satisfaction, climate exists at the group or organization level of analysis, and captures the human experience of the organizational environment. The organizational climate construct has received exten…
Organizational Climate in the Work Setting
The Effects of Organizational Climate and Culture on Productive and Counterproductive Behavior
This chapter is about how organizational climate and culture are related to the aggregate productive and counterproductive behavior of employees in organizations. It begins by clarifying how individual behavior differs from unit-level behavior, as well as the ways that unit-level behavior can be conceptualized and studied. It then introduces a framework that illustrates how organizational cultural assumptions and values are manifested in the poli…
The implementation leadership scale (ILS)
BACKGROUND: In healthcare and allied healthcare settings, leadership that supports effective implementation of evidenced-based practices (EBPs) is a critical concern. However, there are no empirically validated measures to assess implementation leadership. This paper describes the development, factor structure, and initial reliability and convergent and discriminant validity of a very brief measure of implementation leadership: the Implementation…
Organizational Climate and Culture
Organizational climate and organizational culture theory and research are reviewed. The article is first framed with definitions of the constructs, and preliminary thoughts on their interrelationships are noted. Organizational climate is briefly defined as the meanings people attach to interrelated bundles of experiences they have at work. Organizational culture is briefly defined as the basic assumptions about the world and the values that guide…
The emergence of team helping norms
This research examined the antecedents of organizational citizenship behavior helping norms in teams, specifically with regard to how members' personality, values, beliefs, and helping behavior predict the emergence of helping norms in newly formed project teams. We drew from theory on emergent phenomena and team composition research to propose and test a compilation model of how helping norms are influenced by having at least one member with par…
Testing the latent factor structure and construct validity of the Ten-Item Personality Inventory
Leadership and Procedural Justice Climate as Antecedents of Unit‐level Organizational Citizenship Behavior
Despite an abundance of research conducted on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) at the individual level of analysis, relatively little is known about unit‐level OCB. To investigate the antecedents of unit‐level OCB, data were collected from employees of 249 grocery store departments. Structural equation modeling techniques were used to test a model in which procedural justice climate was hypothesized to partially mediate the relationship …
Organizational Citizenship Behavior in Work Groups
Although the relationship between unit-level organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and unit outcomes has been well established in recent years, the conceptual development of OCB at the unit level of analysis has not been adequately addressed. In an effort to fill this conceptual gap and to spur future research, the authors apply the literature on group norms to the concept of OCB. The resulting framework suggests a cyclical relationship betwe…
