Longer-term impact of pesticide bans on suicide in South Korea
INTRODUCTION: Pesticide self-poisoning accounts for 14%-20% of global suicides. South Korea banned paraquat and eight insecticides commonly involved in suicide in 2011-2012. We investigated the longer-term (2013-2019) impact of the pesticide bans on reducing suicides in South Korea. METHODS: Suicide data by sex, age, area and method among people aged 15 years or above were extracted from registered death data (1997-2019). Data for suicide by self…
Preventing suicide by restricting access to Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs)
Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide. A previous systematic review showed that regulations limiting access to highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs) were successful in preventing suicides. As the WHO strongly supports regulation of pesticides, we aimed to update and strengthen the evidence on the effectiveness of HHP bans. We conducted a systematic review by searching MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO databases in March 2024 for manuscripts publ…
Health beliefs and their relation to household, necessary, and unnecessary contacts across Covid-19 epidemic waves in Taiwan
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted widespread preventive measures and altered individual contact behaviors. However, limited research has examined how health beliefs shape these behavioral changes. This study investigates the association between health beliefs and close contact patterns during two COVID-19 waves in Taiwan, using a longitudinal survey conducted between July 2020 and June 2021 (the 2021 summer wave, n = 728) and a cross-sectional surve…
Gender differences in the relationship between alcohol use patterns and health-related quality of life in a population experiencing a recent surge in harmful alcohol use among females
Socio-demographic, family, and health-related predictors of maternal mental health trajectories during eight years postpartum in a national cohort of 17,886 mothers in Taiwan
Trends in the use and nonmedical use of sedatives-hypnotics in the population aged 12 to 64 years in Taiwan
Background Many countries, including Taiwan, have tightened regulations on prescribing sedatives-hypnotics over the concern of their associated adverse health effects. However, it remains seldom investigated whether different age-sex strata have differential trends in national surveys over time for either the use or nonmedical use (NMU) of sedatives-hypnotics. Comparing Taiwan’s two national surveys in 2014 and 2018, we aimed to examine (1) the p…
Changes in suicide inequalities in the context of an increase and a decrease in suicide mortality
Revisiting the hidden wound
Reported domestic violence cases were higher than expected during the pandemic, particularly during the postoutbreak periods when the outbreak control measures were relaxed and people's movement resumed. Tailored prevention and intervention measures may be needed to address the increased vulnerability to domestic violence and restricted access to support during the outbreaks. New Covid-19 challenges and response strategies adopted by a national suicide prevention hotline
Crisis helplines provide important support for vulnerable individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may also impact the helplines. We explored the challenges that the pandemic brought to Taiwan's national suicide prevention hotline and the hotline's responses. We interviewed 14 hotline workers and conducted data analysis using the framework method. The pandemic posed two new challenges to the hotline: potential service interruption and the …
Single and combined effects of marital status, education attainment, and employment status on suicide among working-age population
Marital status, education attainment, and employment status have a separate and combined impact on suicide among the working-age population. Specifically, the divorced and unemployed or economically inactive status amplified suicide risk, predominantly among young adults. Monitoring and intervention for those young adults should be considered for suicide prevention

Residential Socioeconomic Environments and Areca Nut Use in Taiwan
Background While the association between residential socioeconomic environments and the use of globally common substances such as alcohol and tobacco has been well documented in Western countries, it remains little known about regionally important substances, such as areca nut in Asia. Objective: This study was aimed to develop residential environmental indicators in the context of Taiwan and examine their associations with areca nut use, in comp…
Gender difference in suicide in Taiwan over a century
Background Suicide rates are higher in men than in women in most countries, although the gender ratios vary markedly worldwide. We investigated long-term trends in suicide rates and the male-to-female ratios in relation to age, method and economic factors in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial (1905–1940) and postwar (1959–2012) periods. Methods Suicide data were from the Statistical Reports of Taiwan Governor’s Office (1905–1940), Vital Statisti…
Association of neighbourhood social and physical attributes with depression in older adults in Hong Kong
BACKGROUND: Previous studies investigating the independent effects of neighbourhood-level factors on depression are rare within the Asian context, especially in the elderly population. METHODS: Data for 29 099 older adults aged 65 years or above who have received health examinations at elderly health centres in Hong Kong in 2008-2011 were analysed. Using multilevel regression modelling, the cross-sectional associations of neighbourhood social att…

Do Poorer Areas Have Poorer Access to Services in Hong Kong? A Small-Area Analysis Based on Multiple Spatial Accessibility Indicators
The spatial pattern of premature mortality in Hong Kong
Research into understanding the relationship between access to housing, health and wellbeing in cities has yielded mixed evidence to date and has been limited to case studies from Western countries. Many studies appear to highlight the negative effects of public housing in influencing the health of its residents. Current trends in the urban housing markets in cities of advanced Asian economies and debates surrounding the role of government in pro…
Individual-, household- and neighbourhood-level characteristics associated with life satisfaction
We examined the relationships between individuals’ life satisfaction and individual-, household- and neighbourhood-level characteristics and evidence for cross-level interactions. We used data on individuals’ life satisfaction and a range of individual- and household-level characteristics from the Hong Kong Panel Study of Social Dynamics (2011) with linkage to neighbourhood-level aggregated data extracted from the 2011 census. The neighbourhood-l…

Mental wellbeing amongst younger and older migrant workers in comparison to their urban counterparts in Guangzhou city, China
Efforts to promote mental health amongst migrant workers may be usefully targeted on younger migrants and include measures aimed to improve working conditions, strengthen the social support network, and address age-specific needs
Suicide rates among working-age adults in South Korea before and after the 2008 economic crisis
BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have shown that macroeconomic factors are associated with changes in suicide rates. We investigated how changes in economic conditions associated with the recent economic crisis in South Korea influenced suicide rates among working-age adults. METHODS: Time-series analyses were performed to examine the temporal associations of national unemployment rates and sex-employment-specific suicide rates in South Korea from 20…
Impact of 2008 global economic crisis on suicide
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of the 2008 global economic crisis on international trends in suicide and to identify sex/age groups and countries most affected. DESIGN: Time trend analysis comparing the actual number of suicides in 2009 with the number that would be expected based on trends before the crisis (2000-07). SETTING: Suicide data from 54 countries; for 53 data were available in the World Health Organization mortality database and…

The leading methods of suicide in Taiwan, 2002-2008
The leading method of suicide varied by age group and changed from 2002-04 to 2006-08 in Taiwan. This was due primarily to changes in socio-cultural acceptability of the use of charcoal burning as a method for suicide by younger age groups
Suicide epidemics
Rapid rises in the use of new sources of gas for suicide were generally associated with increases in overall suicide rates. Suicide prevention strategies should include strengthening local and national surveillance for early detection of novel suicide methods and implementation of effective media guidelines and other appropriate interventions to limit the spread of new methods
